Stoney, it takes a lot of finesse to drop an engine into an XJ with the tranny already in place. I did it, but it was a major bitch. I had to reposition the tilt of the engine by repositioning the chain a few times. It is really hard to get the pilot shaft into the troque converter. It is a lot easier to remove the tranny and get the engine bolted to the engine mounts, then mate the tranny up.

well we got the enigne bolted up to the mounts with out unbolting the tranny! so i hope everything went together ok i think it should of cuz we got the engine flush with the bellhousing so now it is just tidious work bolting it back together!!

Wow Stoney! You used the word "tedious" correctly in a sentence! Didn't spell it right, but hey... that's progress [img:e0d794f94e]http://www.extrememopar.com/ot/bigok.gif[/img:e0d794f94e]

If the bellhousing sits flush with the engine mounting flange, and two bolts are in, the rest should thread right in.

well it isn't the two main bolts on the side that are in, just the two top side bolts. and then my other ? is how do i bolt the flywheel and the torque converter together???

The key is: the face of the bellhousing must be flush with the face of the engine mounting surface.

I am not sure what you mean, about the 1/4 inch but it should fit flat like Andy said. If its like most autos there should be 3-4 bolts that bolt the fwheel to the converter.

be carefull about tightening everything up without making sure its sitting flush if you tighten the bolts with something not lined up correctly you will snap the ears off of the bellhousing, not a great situation. its all to common for the converter to not be slid and rotated all the way on so it won't go together right, and the person installing it snaps a ear off trying to get it to all suck back together with the bolts.

there should also be alignment pins in the engine block or bellhousing.

btw a chiltons is a great investement :)

i have a chiltons!! but thanx for the advise!!
