How about the Rusty's offroad Rock Rails??

I know...and thats pretty much the main reason I started the thread....i want to get the rails-chassis stiffener in one. I want one thats going to help the chassis most while providing the most protection. I dont want to have to buy a stiffener and rockrails.

They bolt in about 4-6 places using thread cutting bolts. AJ's actually wrap in a 90* to the leaf hanger as well. I used 3 legs for mine so they tie in at 6 points. I have a total of 15 tie in points per side.

frame?

we don't need no stinkin frames!

seriously though, if you want to buy chassis stiffener and rocker protection as one unit, check out Detour's

As far as I know detours is the only company you can order a unibody stiffener-rockrail in one. If you already have rails you can order the stiffener from them and weld your rails on. That is probably what I am going to do this summer.

How many different places do these rock rails (A.J.'s and JCR's) bolt to the XJ? How much to they help the frame?

Since XJ are unibody all the bolts go into the frame!
If you are talking about the box structure that the front and rear axles attach to then the JCR's have 8 per side, spread out on 2 flanges. They also attach pinch seam right under the door or doors with 5 or 6 bolts per side, which is also part the the XJ frame.

Right, but do they stiffen the frame, an inherit problem on all XJ's, or do they just bolt to the frame, adding very little, if no actual frame stiffening?

Due to the way they mount they have got to add to the structure, they are not sold to replace frame stiffeners.

I've got them on my DD, it drives and handles the same, no perceived difference.

No idea if they would stiffen up enough to not add separate frame stiffeners, may be worth a call or e-mail to the ones that make them.

Our sliders mount using 5 bolts in the pinch seam and 8 bolts into the main uniframe. So 13 bolts per side.

Ours also come with a Lifetime warrenty. You dent them, bend them, break them, we replace them. Use them for hi lifting, pull the vehicle sideways, winching it back over after a flop, whatever.

If anyone is coming to winterfest and would like to see ours first hand, we will have some with us for ppl to look at/ buy.

If anyone has any questions for us, call us at the shop 269-372-2842. We also give 10% off to NAXJA members.

Wish I could make it down there, had actually planned on it up until a couple days ago. Ah well, there's more events this year!

Our mounting setup is somewhat the same. On the pinch seam we use a piece of angle instead of flat and tie it into the main rockrail body in 2 areas (3 in the pic).

The rear mount bolts to the rear spring hanger, really braces things up!

It's good to see both our pictures have the rockrails already muddied up, no show parts for either of us!

Aj's and JCR's are both going to have some stiffening effect as a result of tying the 'frame' rail in with the pitch seem front and back. However if you are realy looking for a frame stiffener, Detours or some other specific uni-body stiffener would be what you are looking for.

The Detours system is a bit different, the outriggers are welded & gusseted
to the frame stiffener, the stiffener is tied to the chassis at the front & rear
suspension points using formed 1/4" plates, those too are gusseted. There are
4 areas provided for plug welding the stiffener directly to the unibody as an
option, a long arm version is available which works with a few long arm kits
on the market (Clayton being one of them), and lastly the adjustable pinch lip
connections....the pinch lip connections are'nt as critical on the Detours set-
up due to the fact the outriggers are supported by the stiffener, not plates.

I think the best and strongest your gonna get the unibody (without fabbing) is:

AJs rails
TNT belly skid
TNT chasis stiffiners

When everything is welded/bolted together it should be pretty dang strong.

I have AJ's Super Square Rock Rails and I really like them but they are a little bulky and the self tapping bolts are a waste of time. Nothing against AJ or any other company but bolting your rock rails to your 1/16" frame rail won't do much. Pretty much most of the strength comes from the pinch seam. I ended up welding mine to the frame to make sure they wouldn't go anywhere. I've bashed mine several times on rocks and they did there job and allowed me to slide over whatever I was on.

As to frame itself I noticed the jeep felt much more stiff especially when articulating over things.

If you are looking to buy I would first look at the site sponsors and then just shop around.

My only real complaint is that with these rock rails I lost about an inch or so of ground clearance..

I wouldn't touch anything rusty's anymore I learned the hard way with my TJ

When I bought my sliders I heavily researched JCR and Rigid. I went with Rigid since they tuck up tighter (lowest point is flush with pinch seam) , and I would not have to pay shipping since I am local.
