As the poll will probably determine what I'll do with my insulation underhood...

What I really want to know, is if there will be any adverse effects of removing it? My reasons as follows: The intake tube/cone filter I have is rubbing an hole in it, and i'm considering vents up front.

I think there is a post on here from last week or maybe a few days ago that asked this question, I just cant remeber who started it. I believe its just to keep the sound down.

The insulation is useless, and adds more weight to your Jeep. Get rid of it. If anything I imagine it will trap more heat in the engine bay.

The pupose of the insulation is to deaden sound (who cares) and to keep the heat off the hood paint- if you dont care about the paint- rip it off

Ok, the hood paint I can buy. But I have an '87 that took 17 years and 200,000miles to start peeling the paint, and that was from sun not heat. It's pointless.

so does the passenger seat, the rear seat, the seatbelts, the roof rack, the stereo, the glove box door, and the ROOF.

Just ditch that _hit, and watch the MPG'S soar!

My 95 has it, and I'm leaving it. My Dad's 97 dosn't have it, ands there's a clear absence of paint that follows my radiator hose, so I'd say leave it.

As far as I know, it's really only there for sound deadening and a mild heat barrier. That "stuff" is all over on every car. I took 70 pounds of it out of a Mustang. I also had a friend who had it hang down and smolder under the hood when it touched the exhaust. In the end though, it's up to you

Newbie here. The purpose for the insulation is not for sound or heat deflection, its for fire extinguishing. If your engine catches fire it "melts" the insulation and covers the fire to help put it out or at least give you more time to escape.

None in my 1999.....Don't need it. It's just another thing to collect dust and dirt. I've ripped it out of every vehicle I've owned. Wranglers don't have it....

Took it out of ours and it did help keep the temp down. I don't know about you guys, but we seem to have an over heating problem out on the trail. We have two electric fans that run all of the time and that didn't help.

I have been fighting overheating all summer long, and I am still not sure what If I got it solved. Removing the insulation only seemed to help a little though.

So far the poll results are very close. I'm still undecided. Have insulation on hood of an 87 with noisy valves and the insulation still in relatively good shape. Don't care much about paint but more so on engine noise. Those of you who have removed: Is the noise difference noticeable? Interior sound?

My 91 never had any (at least not since I've owned it). The heat and paint argument makes since to me, the first place on my hood to start peeling clear coat was directly over the exhaust manifold.

Doesn't seem too loud to me, but with never having had any there I have nothing to compare to.

Hmm.. By far its been nearly 50-50... Tough call. I've noticed a curious thing, that maybe the newer xj's (98 and up?) may not have the hood insulation?

One thing that I did for the meantime was cut out a square above teh intake..(was getting all raggedy) I'm really curious about more experience with the people who have taken off their insulation.. :)

I removed mine but i wish i had kept it. Radiator went on me and burned the paint off the underside of my hood. If i had left it I was told it wouldnt have destroyed my battery my hood or damaged my electrical system.

My 2000 never had it. Jeep will tell you that on the new Libbys and Grands that it does serve to protect the hood and as a fire retardant, etc. As for sound I only ever hear my tires off the trail..On the trail its the aux fan I hear. Not sure insulation would help. I have removed a fair number of "stock" parts that I haven't replaced (rear sway bar comes to mind). If you want it gone, I say do it....since whatever its supposed to be there for apparently isn't consistent over the years.
