FAWK!!!

I just found out im a week ahead of myself!!!

Thought i was planning this out for THIS weekend.... June 4th!

Go twice.

stock usually implies no lift and 29 or 30" tires =)

I have t-case armor, gas tank skid, stock drive train and lift though.

I read that as "stock drive train and a lift though."

Sorry. :)

Yeah, I would not try holcomb in a stock xj with no lift. I ran it with a guy in a tj with no lift, we drug him over the rocks with a winch, and he took massive damage.

Do you have a locker or anything? Tow points? When are you wanting to go? I ran Holcomb several times with my 3" lift and it was pretty difficult. I have seen a guy run it with a budget boost and a rear locker. He did a good job and had a couple of good spotters.

Oh yeah, he had rock rails and the other armor you have. Do you have rock rails?

I personally wouldn't run or recommend a stock height vehicle. The rains from last year really changed alot of the trails up there.

There are no by-passes for the 2 major rock gardens and there are other challenging areas as well.

BTW, Holcomb Creek is NOT the same as Holcomb Valley. The :main" trail (3n16) runs through Holcomb Valley and there are a ton of off-shot trails. 3n16 is a graded fire road that stock cars could drive on.

There are plenty of trails that a stocker can run that give you some great views.

and the pic Cal posted isnt as tough as it looks..

It may not be, it was the first picture in the directly that i clicked on (that was holcomb). Either way, a stock jeep isnt likely to make the run without taking some damage and being strapped.

Not bad i will come if you dont mind... I ran all the way to the top with 3.07 and no locker it wasent that bad..... Now ive got 4.56 and a locker in the rear it does alright

great info guys thanks (even though ifoundastick threw me off by recommending the trail)
I dont have rock rails or locker.
i do have tow hooks on the front and hitch on the back.
i do have t-case skid, gas tank skid

I guess i wont go. It was with some 4"+ lift and 33"+ YJ/ZJ dudes who told me to go but i was not sure and did not trust their opinion of the trail. So i looked to my naXJa kindred for advice.

The fact that the rock gardens have no "bypass" is key information. Those are the spots that give me the most concern.

I have the San Bernadino map that shows all the numbered trails designations, great maps... i picked one up in Idyllwild over the new year weekend and it had Big Bear on the back. Idyllwild has few if any challenging trails (which is no surprise i guess) but there are some awesome campgrounds accessed by dirt roads, i recommend Thomas Mountain for some great hilltop/view camp spots.

as far as skids... does everyone run oil pan skids? how likely is it to puncture the engine or tranny pan? that is one of my bigger fears, cause it would mean being stuck on a trail for sure.
i assume the chances of puncture are greater w/o a lift and tires.

Dudes?? Where did everybody go?

You realize this post was started in June of 05 right?

Don't forget TDS is coming up in early march. Don't break your junk before then. Your insanity will be needed in the night runs.... :wierd:

I crawl on the rocks a lot and have never worried about the oil pan. You tend to keep the large rocks under your tires (thats the idea anyways). A tranny skid would be nice for some of those breakover hills, with the longer wheelbase XJ's like to grab belly dirt.

Im the unlucky one who let that one rock slip...

went with the Nth degree skid

That's right - last year post. Please keep an eye in the very near future for a couple of runs to Big Bear. I will be planning a run at the begining of Feb for Holcomb Creek or similar.

Last time I planned a run, I had 22 vehicles show-up. We split into two groups - one was big lift, lockers, etc - they ran John Bull. The other was a little smaller - a budget boosted XJ, a few stock TJ's, a a few 3-4" XJ's - we ran Holcomb Creek.

I want to run our NAXJA chpater trail soon. We have adopt-a-trail on one of the trails, but I ma not sure which one it is. I know that is connects to Holcomb Creek though.

wow ruggedjeep, nice battlescar
yeah those nth degree mobs look nice

its funny opinion on stocker + holcomb creek seems varied... my conclusion is that it is one of those in between trails, with leanings toward "stockers be yee warned".

Yeah my junk is broken right now... but it's just because i dont have a front drive shaft. will be ready by then. I’ve just been lazy and not wanting to spend the money on my piece. But Holcomb is not that bad I guess to me. But I did have 33's and 3.07 you just gotta be graceful I guess. It would be cool if they got alot more snow then the trails would be alot more challenging.
