I am looking at a 97 PSD it has 185,000 miles! How much life does this truck have left? It looks imaculent I am buying it from the Ford dealer here in town who is known for selling good quality trucks. He wants $16,800 for it. That is a good price but I am a little leary of the miles. Kelly Blue book says $16,555.

What do y'all think?

2wd or 4wd, supercab or crew cab, stick or auto?

To get it to book for the figure you gave, it has to be a crew cab 4x4 automatic XLT with every possible option. Very nice trucks bring all the dough, but retail book on a truck, even a Powerstroke, with that many miles is too much money. I work at a Ford dealership and I'm sitting here at work right now. I'm the used car manager, so I deal with this everyday. If you want the truck, it's up to you to determine what it's worth to you. Personally, I think the truck is worth in the $13-13.5k range, depending on what it actually is.

Issues with those trucks are trannies (it's a Ford), occasionally injector pumps, and the intake can break a seal and suck in dirt which will destroy the motor. They went to individual, hydraulic injector pumps at some point, but I don't remember which year and those don't have much problem. At 186k miles the trans has likely already been gone through, and most of the time the repair also upgrades the trans and they can be made to be very stout.

Back to work.... :D

Keep passin' out the info there Goat. I'm lookin' at getting a 99 F350 4 dr, powerstroke of course. It's damn near impossible to find a manual. What mileage are the autos puking at? It seems the trucks I'm finding are typically around the 80-100K range.

Sean, that's way too much. I've been looking at these trucks for months now and I can find 4x4's with the xlt package for less than that. Maybe we should head down to Texas together, they're everywhere down there.

My 95 PSD E350 van has over 167k miles, and runs great. I did a trans at about 143k, as Goatman says, with upgrades it shifts better than any of the new Ford trannies I've had. Another issue that I've heard of is that lack of proper antifreeze additive can cause cavitation leading to antifreeze in I believe the No.8 cylinder. IIRC that was occuring at around 120k though and it may have been corrected by 97. I also had some of the glow plugs go bad, so it wouldn't want to start in colder weather, and that was rather expensive to get fixed. Since the van is essential to my remodeling business, I could not take the time to try and fix it myself, and a van is a major PITA to work on anyway. A pickup has much better access to the engine.
Two big pluses are fuel economy of 14-15mpg mostly suburban driving with my lead foot, and good acceleration in a truck that weighs about 7500lb with tools, ladder rack and stuff. HTH

I have been looking for a while also most everything I find is in the $25-$30K range. This truck is the old body style (the one previous to the current one). It is 4X4, crew cab (full four doors), short bed, XLT, power doors, windows, trailer brake installed. The interior is 80% and there is NO RUST anywhere on it which is VERY rare around here. Kelly Blue Book sayes $16,500. The NADA site said $14,000.

I am thinking about trading in my 99 Harley on it since it mostly sits. They are going to call the H.D. dealer Monday to find out what it is worth, I want $5,000.

T the shop I work at we only use PSD duallies. The first truck was replaced at 450k miles, the second was replaced at 285K miles. All were maintained very well, and all had replaced trannies. We've never ran one until it died, we replace them before that, but I still see both of them on the road every now and then. I think if you maintain them, they will run forever.

They should be able to sell that truck for 13k with a very decent profit (I could), and you can probably buy it for less than that. Be patient.... :)

If retail book is 16500 (that's what I had booked it at), wholesale book is 11600. With those miles they should be in that truck, even after reconditioning, less than the 11600. You take it from there, but I'd offer them 12K and see what happens.

I paid 15k for my 95 supercab 4x4 long bed, but it had 112k miles one it. This was about 18 months ago. The auto tranny isn't that great. I keep waiting for mine to go out, but it hasn't yet at 124k miles. I added a huge cooler, and the temps dropped from 200 to about 160. Cavitation can be a problem, but if you add the additive to the coolant, you shouldn't have any problems. If I had it to do over again, I would have went with the manual, but the auto sure is fast for driving around town. Heaviest load I have pulled was my old CJ on a car hauler, about 6,500 lbs. I could run 90 on the flats, and hold 75 on the hills in Kentucky. Getting ready to add a chip, so the towing should be even better.

Today I went in and offered them My bike and $10,000. They said no and countered with $16,500 and $5000 for my bike. I gave them my phone number and told them to call me when they wanted to sell the truck. I am in no hurry.

Deals are out there. Those PSDs are forsale everywhere around NE Indiana and NW Ohio. My buddy bought a 00 F350, SuperCab, 4x4, Long Bed, 6sp man w/the PSD less than a year ago. It had around 60k miles on it when he bought it and he only paid 21k for it! Talk about a deal! He bought it from an individual. If you have time, wait til spring and sell that Harley outright and go in and make deals on vehicle, I have found that you can get a better price on a vehicle when you aren't trying to trade something in, the dealer doesnt have to mess with it, and you're not stuck with going to a dealer if you have the Harley sold, you can wheel and deal with an individual seller.

Also, the ATs usually last around 150k, like most ATs. Just cause you might have trouble with one, doesn't mean that the AT needs rebuild, just ask the SewerBoss, he thought his tranny was toast at barely 120k, turned out to be a sensor that needed replaced not the tranny...
