Help with HP DANA 44

hey guys just another swap....i got a hp 44 with the ford radius arm mounts on the knuckles....can i just cut them off and grind them smooth...please help me out with this one .... i got pics but i dont think i can post them if they will help thanxs
 
Yes cut them off.
Hopefully you have the welded radius arm setup. Cast is harder to cut off and grind.

Buy new bracket kit.

Weld on new kit

Mount axle to jeep and drive.

You really can't grind off the cast-on radius arm mounts. You either stick with a full width axle or re-tube to shorter length. The cast mounts are an assembly unto themselves, pressed on to the tube running to the center section, and connected to the inner C by another short section of tubing, again pressed into both peaces; the axle tube does not run through the cast section.
 
If the radius arm mounts are cast they CAN NOT be cut off. They are cast as part of the axle tube and can't be removed without destroying the tube.

Sounds about right.

I heard a guy talking about the cast arms saying they were a pita to grind off. Sounds more like he was just grinding it down till it was something LIKE an axle tube but was still the casting.

Either way, I wouldn't bother with the cast axle.

Either way depends on what your gunna be doing with ur jeep, cast will hold up to a decent amount of abuse. It will take alot of heavy foot and large tires to snap one.
Id say youd be safe with a heavy 35" (Bogger,Grappler,Krawler,Irok) tire and up to a 37-38" light (Mud terrian,At) tire.
 
Looks like it's cast to me. The others are clearly welded to the axle tube and can be cut off.
 
so i can cut them off.....or can i grind them down and weld to them??? or do i need to retube with new knuckles

Where are you located? Look like the cast ones to me too. What year is the axel?
 
IMO if you want to shorten a HP44 I would sell that axle a find the correct one to do the job right. I figure the axle you have would only work if you keep it full width and run Fords radius arm suspension. I would also not concider grinding or cut any part of the cast portion. I would look for a 1970 -1976 Ford F-150 or F-100 High pinion dana 44. 1970 -1975 had drum brakes and you will need to aquire all the parts off of disc brake dana 44.
 
When I was looking for a HP D44 for my project, all I could find at wrecking yards were complete units costing any where between $450 and up. The one thing they all had in common was they were fully stock, requiring re-build to be used as is. Since we are talking upgrade here, the only thing useful is the housing, since everything else is going onto trash heap. I think reasonably priced axle assemblies are generally found through a friend, or fellow club member, and generally cost arround $100-150. So, IMO, a '78-79 housing, when got for less than $150, is a viable candidate for narrowing and building; however, in most cases it's very hard for a "do it yourself-er" to do successfully, at home. Having the assembly re tubed and narrowed at a shop is feasible, at arround $350.
 
thanxs guys for the great info and help on the axle...im located in Greenville South Carolina...and friends with a great 4wd shop called Foothills 4x4...i guess i will be taken it to them and let them rebulid it to work with a coil susp. with long arms....im updatein b/c i want to run 35mts and i keep breakin dana 30 stubs plus the jeep is my DD

If you have an axle with welded on radius arm mounts, you can grind them off and narrow the axle yourself. If you have an axle with cast in radius arm mounts, you can't grind them off, down, or anything. If you want that axle narrowed it has to be retubed.

Shop labor to retube an axle is not that expensive.
