help! shocks

Take out a drill bit the size of the bolt. Oil the drill bit frequently. Drill the bolts out, run the appropriate size tap through and put in some better hardware. You'll have to be patient, it takes a while.

Yup, I'm in the same boat. I'm picking up a super hard drill bit after work today and a 5/16 tap.

I soaked with pb for a month. Tried the Freeze off stuff and still broke 3 of them buggers.

Can't get enough room to give a good enough wack so two days of pounding on them with a 3# hammer and no dice. Tried a 50 ez out that ez broke. And 3 other drill bits of questionable quality that broke as well.

Good luck!

Knock the welded nuts loose from the body with a hammer and punch or an air chisel and replace them with plain nuts and bolts. Use a string or fine wire tied around the bolt threads, a parts grabber magnet, or some tape and a box end wrench to get the nuts in place. Jeep thoughtfully left a triangular access hole near each upper shock mount so you can get the bolts in the holes.

well I actually did it kind of the stupid way. I measured and took a holesaw bit and popped holes from the top to get access to the top nuts so I could replace them with new hardware and get to them easier next time.

I just had the same problem this week, again. 3 shock changes in the life of my jeep and I broke all 4 the first time (drilled out and tapped), 3 the second time (drilled out 2, knocked out one and welded a nut back into place to use) and all four this last time. I used an air hammer to "pop" the nuts out fo the body leaving some 1/2" holes. I plan to run a Grade 8 bolt with a fender washer from the back, then another fender washer and nut, then my shock, then another nut. Hopefully this combo with some anti-sieze will do the trick so I dont break all 4 of them in another 2 years...
