this is non jeep so iim sorry
but i am trying to figure out it this problem is carb related or not before i order a carb rebuild kit for this thing
its a 1971 opel gt
it runs and idles kinda rough, but stays running
we can drive it, but everytime we come to a stop it dies. itll start right up and run again after that and die at the next stop sign.
we repalaced fuel line and filter, cleaned most of the ignition systems electrical connections.
i was thinking of a few things that could be the problem, do you guys have any ideas?
bad alternator?
bad electric choke?
jets or needles in carb need cleaning
bad electrical connection somewhere?
fuel pump?
so any info you guys have for a car that runs and dies like this?

If the speed-o gear is not hooked up on a Jeep, it will die every time you come to a stop. (my experence is with 5 speeds only not an automatic)

good to know. ill check that out too.

Jon,

Opel GT? Wonderful little stylish car, the bodies were produced at a plant in France and the car assembled in Germany. When the body plant burned down GM killed the GT in favor of the Cadet.

Check the carb for a dash pot that keeps the butterfly from slammin shut when throttle released. So holding the throttle half open with your hand release the throttle and observe if the dash pot slowly retracts the plunger or if the return spring tension overcomes the diaphram. This would be a 1-1.5" diameter brass item with a plunger that the throttle shaft would rest on. The diaphram inside the dash pot allows the throttle to shut but just retards or slows it down. It may also have a vacuum line in the pot opposite the plunger.

You probably would have mentioned if this ws the twin carb (smaller) engine. If the carbs aren't synch'd that would also give you fits.

Check for vacuum leaks, a vacuum leak would cause a severe lean condition and if I recall the engine is not even 1.8L.

The idle jet could have clogged from a small piece of foreign matter, check as last resort as finding a carb kit for one of these puppies is prolly very difficult.

-and Finally-

This should be posted in Other Tech.
Good Luck,
Tom

cool ill post it in other tech then. sorry about that.
it has some non-stock weber carb from an opel place near sonora. i can get a rebuild kit for cheap through them, it has an electric choke.
so checking vacuum lines is a must. i noticed one was pretty well pinched so ill check that out next time im in LA.

Check your points and your timing, sounds like maybe it's a little retarded...it is an opel after all. another poss. ive seen is the choke might be stuck on, joe blow adjusts the idle so it idles right and once the car warms up it shuts down, just reread and i'd try advancing the timing a little before i got too crazy
