So I am looking for a good rifle. Mostly for target shooting, nothing too fancy. Want a .308, whats a good one? preferably less than 1000, wouldnt mind buying used.

well you didnt say bolt action, sinlge shot or semi, for a bolt action its hard to beat a remy 700,in single shot the h&r handi rifle is damn hard to beat and for a semi ,it would be hard to do it for under a grand but a ar based 308 would kick ass,kel tec has a new semi auto 308 ,i hear but i havent seen one, also remy makes a pump rifle based a 870 shotgun,i think you can get them in 308

sorry, i meant to say Semi.

like i said above its going to be hard to find a ar-based rifle for under a grand, but if i was in the market for a 308 semi,i would look no farther than a fal,dsa has them under a grand and they have been in every country

Under a grand I'd just say to stick with a bolt gun. Savage or Remington would be top picks that you could get the rifle, and good glass for probably around 1k. If you were getting something semi you might as well save up and get what you REALLY want instead of settling for something around 1k, or youll end up buying 2!

If you've gotta have a semi-auto, I'd go with a good FAL. DSA makes excellent FALs. I'd stay away from century though.

SA under a grand is going to be difficult (if you want something decent,) but for an SA .308 I'd go with an AR-10 or an FN/FAL (or copy.)

For the bolt, Rem700 or Blaser (Blaser costs a good deal more, but they've got a straight-pull action that is amazing - and switching calibres is easy. You can even switch back and forth between LH/RH, just by swapping the bolt assembly!)

Savage also does some damned decent bolt actions, I just haven't played with them very much. Reports from the field have been universally good on them, tho.

Can't say much for single-shots, since I've not played with them emough.

I'm still old school, a bolt action for shooting and a carbine for the spray and pray crowd. Real world, you want to hit first shot every time at the longest possible distance and/or hit a shoe tip at 200.
Maybe they have fixed the trigger on the FAL, actually a good rifle with a terrible trigger.
IMO good optics on an average rife is worth more than a very good rifle with average optics.
They may have improved the scope mount for the FAL. The old style didn't impress me much.
People rarely talk about the Woodmaster anymore, been years since I've had one. But my old Woodmaster was a good enough brush gun, reliable and tough. I hit what I was shooting at out to 400 yards, as accurate as most out to 250. I've heard they are prone to failing to eject, I never had that rpoblem, it may be an ammo issue, some of my rifles are finicky about what they will eat and shoot accurately with.
Fawk this showdown at the OK coral mentality, I'm going to sneak and peak and when I shoot at something I'm going to hit it. If I need to spray and pry to get them to go to ground, I'll use a pistol or a carbine.

Spend the money and buy an M1A. You WON'T regret it.

ar10 is the way to go if you can afford it. Save your pennies and get the good stuff.

A good ar10 is a decent 700 or 800 yard gun.

If you are just using it for target shooting a bolt will be half as much and probably a little more accurate. A remington 5r is about as good as it gets for out of the box accuracy. They'll run about 950 new. General rule of thumb on good rifles though is to spend at least as much on the glass as you did on the rifle....more if possible.

Rifles come and go but a good optic can be used forever.

AR10, FAL ( with some work ), or DPMS LR308 series. I have the latter with good glass and it's great for target. Remember, good glass and good mounts will add a good half as much AT LEAST to your pricetag. If your looking to get out of it all for 1,000 you're either shooting with irons on a semi or you're gonna have to goto bolt action.

When you say "target shooting" are you talking about the ability to shoot a watermelon at 200 yards, or the ability to shoot a golf ball at 200 yards? Your choices can be narrowed down significantly if you're a little more specific about what you want out of the gun. Also, does your $1k figure include the cost of an optic, or are you just looking at $1k for the rifle? Lastly, how far are you looking at shooting?

A little off topic, but when I was at the range last weekend, they had one of these and in the .416 cal it is legal here in cali. I might sell my jeep to get it, just to be able reach out and touch someone at over a mile. Ammo is expensive, box of 98 rounds for $550.

talked myself out of the need for a semi auto. Was looking at bolt action and came across the Marlin XL7, anyone have experience with this gun? pretty fair price at aroud 300-350 new. Only experience with marlins I have is my old model 70 .22 but that has been one hell of a reliable gun. Also, what can you reccomend in a scope? I know very little about the optics, what should I be looking for? Sorry to re-start this thread but I appreciate you guys' input. Thanks
