Help end tolls.

In Texas, as in other parts of the country, it takes a very long time to get funding for new roads. It takes much less time to get a toll road funded. Toll roads are therefore a usefull method to get needed roads on the ground sooner.

If you don't like toll roads don't drive on them! Next time you drive down to Baltimore or Philly drive on the old two lane road see how long it takes. Toll roads are about the only way to fund roads in most areas due to gov. cut backs. That is the truth!

Yes alot of toll roads use antiquated ways of toll collection (toll plazas every 20 miles that require you to stop), but new ways are being implemented to speed up and make toll colection more efficient and safe. Take the Okla. Turnpike for instance, If you are a frequent user, you don't even have to stop. You just fly right past at 75 mph. If you are not a regular user, you pay when you exit. Never once do you stop and in the middle of the road to pay a toll!

One of the biggest and most notorious toll related bottle necks in the whole country is in this county (Winnebago). It is the I-39\I-90\US-20\US-51 interchange southe east of Rockford in Cherry Valley, Illinois. That plaza is backed up for 5 to 10 miles each way a lot of the time. That plaza will be removed next year.

Tolls are a tax, you will never be able to eliminate them. Tolls are the best way to build and maintain highways and bridges. Wouldn't you pay $50.00 or so to drive a nice, wide, congestion free route across the state or even the country? As some one who travels a lot for work and pleasure, I sure would!

Now you made me think! Boy my head hurts now!

Sean.

On my way to work I can either take a toll road or freeway. I take the toll road because it cuts 20 minutes off the commute, VERY much worth the 2.50 each way for me. The ones who don't wish to pay sit in traffic on the freeway and NOT in my way. :D

Since when has any gov't CUT BACK spending? It's certainly never happened in this country! Gov't simply misuses tax dollars. I want my taxes to pay for roads, not for closing trails and subsidized Viagra for seniors.

Ending tolls is like ending trolls... :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

Last few years I've been working (for the Govt) in road/bridge construction... and I see plenty of things that could be helped as well as some things that are a complete waste of $

NC has no toll roads, but recently our Sec of Trans promoted an idea to turn our 180 miles of (mostly-if not all- two lanes each way) I-95 into toll road. The Governor point blank shot him down... so unless a regime change happens along, that idea's off the table. FYI 95 is a bottleneck and is getting worn out... they are needing 4 lanes each way to meet current/future needs...shoot by the time they get around to building 4 each way, 8 will be needed. Don't even get me started on the enviromentalcases that will sue anyone & everyone involved to divert and/or delay, add cost to almost every current & future project.

OTOH we have a taxpayer funded (through extra tax on motor fuels) Highway Trust Fund that is supposed to be JUST FOR road building & rehab, yet same Governor has no problems 'borrowing' into it to balance the state budget. Lawsuit pending, probably with the construction industry and the 'taxpayers' as plaintiffs.

My solution? Don't have one, other than to build a tunnel from one end to the other...divert all traffic bearing yankee plates into it, make em pay a fee/toll/whatever/and not let them out till their in VA or SC... The transient ones aren't a problem (drive through, spend money, keep going) it's all the damn 'halfbacks' that are screwing the place up.

Shoot, If they tore up all the existing roads I could give a hoot less (other than needing a career change) as I have 4 Jeeps and would make a killing tugging yuppies out of the mud.

Down with Halfbacks!

You obviously do not work in an industry that is supported by government money. I work in the construction industry, it is entirerly funded by the government. The States get the money from the feds. In most areas of the country no one is building new roads. There are projects that have been on the five year plan for twenty years. There are intersections around me that have crashes everyday, fatalities once a month. They can't even put a freeking four way stop sign up.

You all have paved roads? Must be nice...

Been there, done that ... but they didn't offer me a tee shirt. Wouldn't ya know they decide to take down the d**ned toll after I went through on the way west.

The first time I went through the backup was well in excess of ten miles. Second time was closer to "only" five miles. First time was in July and I still thank part of the problem was all the truckers ogling the young ladies in tiny bikinis at the water slide park right adjacent to the toll station.

if in a Jam, seek the inside lane

If you can get a wheel (or two if ya got sack) up on a precast concrete barrier, you get lotsa funny looks and some bewbies...just whatever ya do, don't drop the tire off into the oncoming lane & become stuck...unless ya like angry mobs.

I think it's more fun than a lame ole ramp...since your stuck in traffic with all the other schmucks anyway, might as well entertain self and it keeps the Lems thinking twice about scurrying into your spot.

I heard that the 'Toll Plaza' is comming down this week end. But get this. You did not hear this from me. The Toll road Authority will remove the 'real' toll booth then put up fake ones at night. Then on Monday the gov. 'Blago' will get in a backhoe and knock the fake one down for the T.V. !

I am not making this up. This is the waste that ol xjguy was talking about. But it is also Illinois.

Frankly, I'm in favour of the idea - simply because eliminating toll roads could set a useful precedent in that it would mark the first time the government could be cowed into REDUCING the money they get on an ongoing basis, and maybe we could use that as a springboard to make it happen in other places as well.

I wouldn't trust the government with a loose quarter, but it seems to me that every time I look around again they want me to vote to give them more. Hell - cut out "middle management," stop paying them so much (aren't most pols independently wealthy these days?) and look for ways to increase efficiency in process, and maybe we'll have a shot at cleaning things up...

One I don't understand is the toll section on I-70 in Kansas. You drive all the way across the country on 70 and all of a sudden there's a toll booth for a short section of INTERSTATE highway. Reminds me of that scene in Blazing Saddles. TC

A toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll, and if we don't get no tolls, then we don't get no rolls. - Little John

So you see, if you eliminate the tolls, where is the little guy going to get his rolls?
