Ok had to pull the headlinner b/c some of the nut zerts did not work right and fell down into the body when I went to mount the roof rack. Now that the linner is out I'm thinking I dont want to put it back. ANythoughts? I was thinking it was going to make things louder in teh cab. That is what happened when I pulled the carpet. So I'm also thinking it will be much better on the kids ears with it in there. So to leave it out or put it back that is the question! :dunno:

Not to be a jerk, but this is tech? I've run into a number of posts like this lately, and I'm beginning to get a little discouraged...

Ok let me rephrase the question. Those of you that have removed all the interior carpet/panels/headlinner do you have any regrets? Did you do anything like the sound deadening stuff I see to help the echo inside or the increased noise level? Did you have an echo inside? When I pulled the carpet I noticed a lot more noise any one else? And I dissagree on this being tech, I am modifying the interior so there for it is Modified Tech.

Capt Nemo when you become a member I might listen to what you have to say.

Ya really, put it back in if ya want to, or don't. Who cares?

Well I care b/c when I pulled the carpet I was not aware that it would get as lound inside as it did. Not everyone on here is young and some of us have kids that ride in our jeeps and the noise level concerns me for there delicat ears. Not to mention that there maybe someone on here that has a tip about how to help deaden the noise some.

Well, I had everything out when I did my cage. My carpet is funky and stained but I put it back in because I couldn't stand the noise, especially the buzz of the fuel pump. I also glued carpet to the roof for a new headliner and it helps tremendously with noise reduction.
So, if you're that concerned about noise, put the damn carpet and headliner back in.

How about ear plugs?

My '88 MJ had no headliner when I bought it, and still doesn't. Also has no carpet. Even though the MJ roof is a lot shorter than an XJ roof, there is a certain amount of "drumming," especially at highway speeds, and the noise level inside the cabin is high enough that with the volume level set to what is a comfortable level for city driving, the radio(CD) cannot be heard over the road noise.

Unless you enjoy that macho, bare-bones approach, I'd suggest that in the long run you'll be happer if you put it back.

In my eyes, granted I dont have kids but think of them with this and I would recommend to put it back in.... Plus it will help save on your hearing, hearing will never grow back or get better, take it from me I work on Fighter Jets, hearing is a big asset

Put it back in. Dunno if I'd bother with fatmat, or other sound reducers up there. But for the noise reduction, and incidental bouncing of the noggin off the roof, I'd put it back in.

I'm had mine out after I rolled it and it was noticable louder then when I reinstalled it. Plus I think it's looks better with it in if that counts for anything.

If you're concerned about noise why not leave it out and put Dynamat on the ceiling. You could cover it with some kind of light carpet and I would bet that it would be quieter.

After I pulled the carpet I put Dynamat on the floor and Herculined it. The Herculiner has held up well with almost one year of use and the Dynamat has kept it kinda' quiet. Of course the Flowmaster exhaust system made it noisy all over again!

this is a good cheap solution to the sound, cheaper than fatmat, dynamat, etc they even have marine and aviation grade sound absorbtion and deadening materials, very good prices.

http://www.soundproofing.org/sales/prices.html

If your kids are whiners i would get something just for your comfort if the new louder headlinerless XJ would make them get all whinny and crabby.

Also they price their stuff in the running foot ... a foot wide by four feet long, thats their unit. So all the prices you see that say running foot is for 4 square feet. you could get the 1/4" thick matt for $10.50 per running foot, and buy four running feet , and put some in the doors and the fire wall and above the exhaust and wheel wells for around 50-60 bucks total. Good deal,. and the brats will think they are in a lexus

I don't see why not. I used fatmat over herculiner, and had no separation problems, and if herc will stick to the base metal of the flooring, it'll stick to the aluminum backing of fatmat or similar products. If I had it to do over again, I'd prolly just put herc down, for rust protection, and a thicker rubber mat over everything, but then, it's a trail rig with no carpet, and looks ain't a high priortity. Don't get me wrong, dynamat and such have their place, but for the expense, I'm not certain there was a huge noise reduction, or heat reduction, off of areas like the tunnel. G'luck. You might want to scuff up the backing of the dynamat or fatmat, to help it stick some, but dunno if I'd acetone it, that might attack the asphalt like material the backing protects.

What I did was clean the floor thoroughly, apply the Dynamat that I'd already primed, and then Herc over that. I don't know for sure if it was really neccessary to prime it, but the Herculiner definitely sticks to primed Dynamat and it's not any trouble.

Ok that is what I was looking for. Thanks guys it will go back in. However, Is there any type of paint in sound deading materal? My interior is coated with Duplicolor truck bed coating, and I like it but this has gotten me to thinking that maybe I should look into some of the matts listed for the tunnel and under the rear seat. However, if there was something on the market that could be painted in that would be much better.

I think the attitude started here! Know what you are talking about before you open your mouth! This is a discusion about modifying the interior!
