header leak

this engine has been over heated, ran low on oil, had low oil pressure for a few days due to a plugged oil filter, ran low on water so it has be torchered. and frankly any less of an engine would have blown.

All this just over changing a header bolt and a gasket! geeze lol.

Hey guys, i need to change my oil, should i put a ls1 engine in or a 454. =D

you got to remember there are a few thing wrong and at some point ether i will need to rebuild or replace. yes this is fixable. and yes the rear main is to.. but at what point do I stop keeping this old engine alive and rebuild it? its a cost thing...
if i spend 8 hrs to fix just this head leak, then its 4 hrs to the rear main, then 2 hr finding rest of the vacuum leaks. So there is 14 hrs of work to be don to it now... 14 hr i don't have. shot i barley have 4 on any one day. and that is just to keep it running for what 50-100k more if i am lucky. when she will run with out doing anything from about that before I have to change it out. that just seams to be a wast of my money and time.

with that said here is a way that i could maybe deal with the cost.

Dose anyone have experiences doing a new rings and bearings in the jeep motor why it is in the cherokee. If i have to tear down the top to do the built and the bottom to do the oil seal. how hard would it be to pull the pistons and hone the sleeve installing new rings and push rod bearings and crank bearings. this will help the engine last longer and make it last 100k more.

ya ya i know you don't want to rebuild a engine in the car but well if it can be refreshed. seance i would have it almost completely apart.

Ah so thats the whole story=D What i am doing to minimize downtime is, i have another engine on my engine stand that im doing all the refreshing to while my jeep is still able to wheel. Though its not my daily driver, i still didnt want it to be down while i did a motor rebuild.

Get a short block from a jy for fairly cheap, put new rms, water pump, valvecover gasket, thermostat, etc in it and swap em out in a day. Would leave you with 0 downtime. Im sure Dave has an engine stand you can borrow! His shop is awesome and has everything from the looks of it lol. The rest is done with basic hand tools.

The shortblock will cost you no more than new rings/pistons/bearings etc.

That is a great idea. So i have to buy a block and all the parts to build it out.

just to have a gas engine that gets 15-17 mpg. and that is my deli-ma.

if doing that way would it be more cost effective to go Diesel? I know the up front cost maybe a little more for diesel. gas $400 then rebuilding it OR diesel $400 and installation cost?

Also pretty sure the diesel will take more time.

Dave, he has a nice big shop and all the tools i wish i had. great guy and very helpful.

If you go with the 454, you should change your trany/Tcase set up. Then you will have to swap out both front & rear drive lines. Lug bolts will also have to swapped out for bigger ones. When you get done with that will go over steering and your sound system:speepin:

I honestly dont know what it would take to put a diesel motor in, but that would be pretty awesome. Harness/mounts/computer/trans/tcu/ignition/exhaust/fuel system. Way more than 400$ im sure!

Of course im just guessing here but logically, that sounds like the minimum of stuff u would need.

I think it would be a dog with the om617 the 4.0 has 65hp and 45ftlbs more power. Plus where care you getting the adaptor for the bel housing and input shaft or a flex plate for that matter

He was just pointing out a non-turbo model. The turbo models are a way different animal all together. I have found in my research that with just a few small tweaks of the injection pump they can produce cummins 4bt numbers for power. They don't rattle and shake ne'er as much and also fit in a jeep much better. the sprinter van is powered by a newer version of the 5 banger and have plenty of power.
