HD fan clutch upgrade...

ok, so if you go to advance auto parts' website the 215149 doesnt come up for the 97-98 ZJ but it DOES come up when you look up a 94-00 XJ 2.5 4 cylinder!

Hmm, but if you go to advance autos old website (parts america) it DOES come up for the ZJ ... ok whatever I give up i'm just going to get one!

Post up with the part number of the one you get from AA...my buddy works up there (for the time being anyways) and I can get his 20% discount. I searched the 215149 part number and found it on their site for the 4 cylinder like you mentioned, but I want to be sure that it's the same HD upgrade as the Napa one.

I got the one from Advance today but i'm not sure how it's going to mount up. The bracket that's on the XJ clutch has 4 holes that slide over the studs, which is then held on by nuts. On this one, the bracket doesn't have holes, rather just cut outs. Below is the one I got today:

I plan on trying it tomorrow. I'll post up if it fits on or not.

since there are 4 slots then it will center itself on the mount as long as the stud diameter is close to the slot width. now if there were 3 slots with 3 studs it would be tough to center.

It will fit, if you look up at the pic i posted, you have the right one. It goes on over the bolts.

Ok cool. Thanks for the replies guys, i'll give it a shot tomorrow afternoon if it's not raining.

Got it on today. Drove it around town for a while with speeds up to 60-65 and so far I haven't heard it unlock yet. For those who don't like that "blow dryer" sound you might not want to do this upgrade. Personally, it doesn't bother me really and my exhaust does a good job of covering up that sound.

Haven't noticed a real difference in cooling while driving, but sitting idle the needle doesn't budge the slightest bit higher than 210. Definitely a good upgrade for people who spend a lot of time stuck in traffic (like me) or crawling on the trails.

ok cool - thats the one I am going to get - my local advance has to order for next day but I can't wait to have the added cooling - my tired 300k renix motor just likes to be a bit on the hot side even with everything else in good working order.....of course, i'm the genious who swapped in such a high mileage motor LOL

i bought a torqflo heavy duty clutch and found the clearance was very high and would not fit without tilting the radiator. The fan blades also would not fit on the clutch without adding spacers/washers.

I went back to a torqflo standard clutch from autozone and that also requires a tilted radiator. At least I think so. The factory fan clutch has a lower clearance.

Just ran into the same problem. I bought a TorqFlo #922737 from Autozone and it was around 1/4" longer than the stock clutch, plus the fan wouldn't mount flush with it.

So I threw my old leaky stock clutch back in, and I'm going to try and find another brand to use. Maybe I'll try a NAPA or Hayden brand instead.

Are you two goobers installing them without fully tightening the bolts on the pulley and all while leaving the belt and pulley under tension?

I tool off my old fan clutch and installed the new one while the belt was applying pressure to the fan clutch pulley which cocked the pulley out more.
Once I tightened the bolts on the pulley it cleared with minimal clearance but it still works.

Try that before giving up.

Nope, the belt was off and the mounting studs for the clutch were tightened down as well.

I just did a quick measurement and the stock clutch measures 3" (laying flat on table) and the TorqFlo measures 3.25". Is this normal or should they be the same? Also, the fan was hitting the clutch body as well (yes it was on the right way).

What brand are the ones from Advance?

The one that I used was a Torque Flow on my 98.
My buddy has a 99 and he used a Hayden, it fit fine.

Are the fans the same throughout all years?

It seems like most people who have done this mod are running late models. Mine is an 88' so maybe there are some differences between Renix and HO designs.

I'll try the clutch again here when I get a chance. Might just have to space the fan from the clutch with a washer or two.

Just a bit of caution to anyone doing this "upgrade", I wouldnt trust it out on the trail if you do any kind of wheeling under heavy load(like pulling someone out of a mud hole or going up and down steep hills). My HD fan made contact with my STOCK radiator and made her pee green all the way home. I got back and replaced the radiator with that "heat buster" or "heat blaster" or whatever its called from Advance Auto. Good so far, but i removed the Fan. Either gonna go with the stock "shorter" fan or another E-fan.
But dont say noone warned ya!

If you have to upgrade to the HD fan to keep your rig from overheating then something else is wrong and you're just covering up the symptoms.
