HD fan clutch upgrade...

thanks alot 88superjeep i just did the swap with great results. i have a csf 3 row all metal, hesco high flow pump, and t stat housing, and mr gasket t stat. well yesterday i was driving with the ac off and it started to act like it was going to go over 210 until i kicked the ac on. well i after the swap getting off the freeway turned the ac off just to see what would happen and it had no problem staying under 210. thanks alot man.

hmmm... maybe a flex-lite or something with less drag but close to equal volume of airflow... hmmm

Yeah, has anyone ever used one of those pretty flex-a-lite fans to replace their "heavy" OEM mechanical fan?

I swapped back to stocker today and am donating the HD fan to somebody's trail-only rig. It would work much better in one of those, since the operating conditions are closer to idle than highway. For my street beater it is too much cooling action.

Did it actually over cool the engine or was the noise level the issue?

I did this about a month ago (mounted the HD clutch to replace the original one). It SCREAMS. Overcooling isn't an issue, but I'm sure that's because the thermostat is getting a workout. I finally full-throttle-accelerated and the resulting noise (not just the new road--there was also some type of squeal) was so disturbing, it has convinced me to switch back to the OEM clutch.

For what I use my truck for, I just don't need it...esp. in January. Now, if I find myself towing/wheeling/etc in the heat, I'll swap it back on. Only takes about 45 minutes taking my time.

overcooling was the problem

Mine overcools somewhat in this cold winter we've had, but considering how warm it gets the rest of the year in socal (and that I still will hit 210 in heavy traffic) I don't see any reason to swap back to the OEM one.

so napa sells it for $62 and advanced auto has it for $26?
hmmm....

Over cooling: Try a new tstat and/or go old school by covering 1/2 to 3/4 of the rad.
It will take less time to warm up and will stay warm longer after key off. Maybe even get a FEW deg warmer.
On my 01 it's 4 screws to pull the grill. Cover with whatever you got handy and duct tape in place. Replace grill and your done.
I made a two part cover. One part can slide under the other to cover from 1/2 to 7/8 of the rad. Just reach through the grill with whatever and adjust a needed.

Overcooling wasn't the issue. I have a ScanGaugeII and I noticed that everyday upon arriving at work or at home, the temp was 193. Every time. It hasn't idled over 202 (indicated 210 on the gauge).

It's the ROAR. I can take extra noise; I've had MTs and a Flowmaster 40 on other Jeeps. It just that at WOT, the thing makes a noise like it's going to come apart.

In the summer, when/if I tow, cruise the beach/Pine Barrens at low speed in hot weather in deep sand, I'll switch back. For now, the OEM Hayden does back in.

i removed my clutch ..let the fan works full power ..i think its better ..i had alot of heat issues...and um gonna install a electic fan switch

After running this mod for a few months, I have to say that I am 100% satisfied! My cooling system was a wreck when I bought the Jeep. I actually thought for a while that I would just have to live with temps around 220+ as a DD. I could not be happier with the performance of the cooling system since the HD clutch install in the beginning of summer. I ran my A/C on max on the hottest days, and my XJ actually ran COOLER with the air on because the clutch fan did such a great job that the e-fan just iced the cake with an extra degree or two of cooler antifreeze. I actually wanted to run my air to keep the truck running cooler! LOL SERIOUSLY! Good luck to anyone upgrading. You gotta get used to the the sound of a jet turbine under the hood, but I have loved that sound from the beginning because it makes it sound like a bigger motor. LOL At first I felt a little drag on the motor, but I don't know if the ECU is compensating for my lead footed driving habits or I am just used to it by now, but I notice lots-o-torque and not any drag any more. I am now able to wait until I have the money and motivation to upgrade to a brand new rad, and the MAC aluminum pressure tank. My cooling system is now complete and great, as is!

it probably did better because when you run the AC or Defrost the E-Fan comes on too.

This is the best cooling mod I have performed. No doubt about it! Thanks for the info.

Now that I'm getting into "warm" So Cal days I'm glad I did this. It ran a bit too cool in the winter but now I can idle in traffic when its 100 degrees out and the needle doesn't leave 210.

i just read this today and during lunch i went over to advanced and bought one. it was $40. i am excited to see how it does.

i have a 180 degree thermostat and louvers so i wonder how its going to do with those as well.

I'm not sure if anyone else will have this problem but i had added the heavy duty fan clutch a couple years back and it always worked well. However 2 weeks ago I added a CSF 3 row radiator to the mix. All was well until I was towing my trailer up a logging road last weekend and the tranny downshifted and the clutch came in to contact with the rad and blew 2 of the tubes. All the mounts are good but just a fyi to anyone with the same combo.

If it contacted your mounts are not good.
