Has your seat broken?

Anyone else had their seat frame break?

I had to take mine apart - found the seat frame broken in 4 places. I had to weld it back together.
Just Curious - has anyone else seen this problem?

Oh, and if you're wondering - I weigh about 240.

Let me guess -- you have an 80's vintage XJ with power seats.

Common problem.

Yup. 88 Limited. Leather / Power seats.

Same problem with my 88. I think mine might have been broken in more like 1000 places. Before I welded mine I shook it around and threw away any parts that fell off. It sits a little funky now, but it's a lot better than falling out every time you open the door.

I had to weld my driver's seat frame on my '90 in two different places where the original welds had failed. Kinda crazy, the two original welds were basically just spot welded and once I looked more, I found the rest of the welds were kind of the same so I put a bead on each of those just for insurance.

My 98 had a broken frame, spot welds had broken on the drivers side near the console, the triangular plate. Took it to an automotive interior place near where I was working that day at 9am one morning, he pulled the seat, stripped it, did a bunch of welds that were only spot welds, repadded it for my size :) and reinstalled it by 1pm to the tune of $50 cash. Major difference, very comfortable now for my 6'6" 269lbs, I don't remember it being that comfortable when it was new.

All 3 XJs I have owned have had broken seats. The worse was from a 2dr 89, the previous owner was a errr....."healthy" girl that manged to break to entire seat up to pieces. I welded everyhting back up. Took some BFH work and some configuring since the whole thing was so out of wack, I made sure I added extra welding everywhere, then painted the frame up, looked like new. I also add axtra padding everytime I open up the seats, lumbar support for all my XJs and the covers get a visit to the washing machine and some 3M Scothgaurd afterwards.

Seat Covers

Where can you get oem type seat upholstery? I would like to redo mine and I'm not too hot on seat covers. What are you using as extra padding?

I've had three different seats break. Right now I am getting to rebuild my seat tomorrow. It's a pain but nobody makes a decent seat for a reasonable amount of money.

Hey guys... I have to pull my seats tomorrow. I have a 94 non power seats. Is it just the four nuts holding those things to the floor. I'm gonna spray them down first. I am assuming I don't really wanna snap these off lol. Anythign I should know going into this?

Th padding I have used has been from surplus seats I had and in the Warrior I actually installed heat and massage with inflatable lumbar support by buying those mats sold with those features (Homedics), taking it apart and reassembling them in my seats. Works amazingly. Any upholstery shop should have foam that you can use, or just grab some cut to shape and glue to your old foam using 3m spray adhesive.

Yup, just those four little nuts. Scary, isn't it?
