Harold of the Rocks

Do people destroy Ford knuckles with no assist load on the high steer arm?

If not, I wouldn't worry about the knuckles.

Its not uncommon to find a stock knuckle outta a stock truck starting to have hairline cracks and such. Like Bill said, there little extra time is worth it. I just went overboard.

Im not going to cut parts of the knuckle off though. So im basically just bracing the top.

Also I found this gem through Ross's thread. I might try to do this. Or something kinda like it just not as good :)

Yeah, I kinda wish a didnt cut the arm off, but whatever. If I hadnt, I wanna gone with something like the Artec arm setup and some simple plating around the kingpin area. Theres a vendor or two on Pirate that sell 60 knuckle gusset kits too.

ok cool. or hot I should say. HAHAHA

how hot did you cook it? and I heard it smells? if so my mother would kill me so Ill have to find another way. and how long do I have before I should stop welding and maybe cook it again if im not done?

I cooked mine at like 450* for like 1.5-2hrs.

I did mine in my moms near new stove :shhh: I cleaned them as good as I could beforehand, they didnt really stink that much. I just made meatballs afterwards and burned a little sauce to cover my ass. She never knew.

and I guess this means im going to have to break down and buy a bottle and gas for my mig.

thanks for all the help guys I would be lost with out you. or worse yet I would get it done, get way out into the woods and my junk would fall apart.
I think I was something around 400-425°F for about and hour and a half, IIRC. Enough to ensure it was evenly hot all the way through. I had tacked the braces on for the most part prior to cooking so I was able to cut weld 'em and then cover them in sand in a 5gal bucket for the night.

I sandblasted and washed them with detergent and an old toothbrush before hand. Mine didn't stink/smell at all, in fact the oven's owner was home watching them for me while I was working on something else. :eyes:

Eh, you'd manage. We just make you do too many other things & spend more money. :o

The carrier was a bitch for me on my 44. I put a big breaker bar between the carier and the bottom of the axle, and pried and banged on it until it eventually came out.

The rag trick was no good for me either.

I've never needed anything more than a small crowbar, I usually jam the handle of my 20" breaker bar into the carrier by the spider gears and pry it out.

so I can get a spartan locker for the 60 for 310$ shipped. Its basically an Aussie. I dont think It will have the carrier deflection problems that the D30 has. so what do you think Should I just run it open for now and buy a full case locker next year. or spartan it now?

No Spartan!!! Get a Locrite!!!

I know Colin will agree with me. He had a bitch of a time getting his Spartan in. That directly convinced me to spend the extra like $20 to get a tried-n-true Locrite.

Bill has a Locrite too without issue.

Another vore for lockrite stupid easy to install and no weird pin design like the spartan

$20 extra? where are you getting that? the only ones Iv found so far are about $100 more then the spartan.

and the vendors on pirate suck. they take forever to get back to you.

ok so of course after I posted that of courese I found one for $382 but that still alot more then the spartan. Is it really that much of a pain in the a$$ to get the sparten in?

edit Ive been using the wrong spelling. which of course was given to me buy Ross. Ive found one for 360 shipped. so If its really that much better I might be willing to spend the extra 50 bucks

no desition to be made just wait till you got the money and get the lock rite, aint like you need it right now

ok I think ECGS wants more for the spatran then the vendor on Pirate. I think Im going to go with the lockright. I just need to accumulate some more cash first My savings are getting pretty low.
