I just returned from my up north quest for inner peace. I like Lincoln County forest for my hunting and mental wellness needs. I traipse around the hills and swamps dressed out in camo carrying my bow and a gps. I hardly see deer any more but lots of other wildlife and it’s as close as I can get to real spirituality.
I planned on camping the whole time but the only camp grounds with electricity that was opened was Council Grounds State Park in Merrill. I show up Wednesday about noon looking to get in. The fact that there was 60 mph gusts of wind didn’t make much of a difference to me. I took this time off from work so it was on no matter what. The park people looked at me like I was nuts ( a look I’m well used to) and wouldn’t let me in ‘due to safety concerns’. So I stayed the first night at the Super 8.
Before it got dark on Wednesday I went out to hang my stand. It was snowing and the wind was blowing like crazy and it was about a ¾ mile walk in. Got out there and hooked up the climber to the tree. Didn’t dare climb up the way the wind was blowing. I left the woods to come back Thursday morning. It was supposed to be colder but the wind and snow was to subside.
I hunted from that stand all Thursday and Friday and didn’t see a thing. Didn’t care either. Just glad to be in my favorite place.
Saturday was the best day. It was promised to be sunny and warm, near 50, and no winds. I dressed light, packed a lunch in my backpack, grabbed my bow and gps and decided to do some serious trekking through the forest.
It was wonderful. The vastness of the woods with the hills and the thick swamps and the valleys and the tall pines and oaks was overwhelming to my senses. You realize that you’re just a spec on this earth and the problems of everyday life really aren’t that insurmountable.
It makes you glad that you’re alive.
Tomorrow’s Monday so everything will go back to sucking again. _
