Ham radio?

That fits the budget....any down sides you've noticed?

Contact Tony here someone (tonytcm?)knows his sign on here.

He has 100watt Motorola maratrax radios for cheap.

These are awesome. The power is great. I can talk to pits over 20 miles away over hills and have like 40 common channels programmed. I even have one for pits. They are big though with a face panel and main power unit. But we'll worth the size if you want serious distance and power.

Rick isn't looking to race though, so he wants a ham radio..

What's the difference? Idk... I just like having the ability to talk to others way far away.

Race radios only work on the commercial bands, 150-174 mhz..

whereas the majority of people are running ham radios, which are explicitly locked out of those bands.

Its kind of like limiting yourself to AM radio. It has more distance, but there's a lot less content..

I'd be interested in one of the maxtracs for the repeater. I'd also recommend the FT1900R for the buggy it's smaller and cheaper. Rick, when you come into town to get that hood, show up on a saturday, we'll go over to HRO off Kearney and 163 and get you setup, they're probably the best prices locally.

Why else do you put a radio in the Jeep? :eeks1:

I have the programming cable, but even without the programming cable its not that hard to program.

But it's very counter-intuitive. Chinese radios suck for programming.

For a rig I'd get a mobile radio, 55W or greater. The Yaesu FT1900R is a good one for that and can be easily modified to run in the business band.

Then get the above Chinese handheld as well so you can call Avery a douche from your camp chair.

I have a icom ic-v8 that I use for racing in Baja. I just know the place I got it from programmed it for the typical race frequencies used down there.

I never thought about using it in the jeep till this thread. Anyone know if it can also be programmed for ham use?
