I had to post it up just to rib Matt some. First trip out with his new cage work and he got to try it out. The cage held up well and he has plans to strengthen it even more. This was at Crozet last weekend. I like his kids reaction to the flop, absolutely priceless!

We had a running bet going as to how long it would take Matt to flop it, I said first day. I guess I win:D

after watching that video, its tough to see how he could have prevented that roll. usually its driver error but that just looked like an impossible obstacle.

I agree, i don't know what he could have done different other than throttle out. Crozet is like that, its as difficult as you want it to be.

wow..... dumb line......

what was that cage made out of?

creep up to hole .. maybe.. wouldnt have flopped over so severly..
bad line imho. if he had a real spotter.. they probably would have warned him lol..

cool roll though! it would have been cool if he powered out of it!

It just looks to me like that obsticle isn't XJ friendly... Kind of hard to throttle out with one tire on the ground...

Obviously it would have been nice to get the back end around more but the tree wouldn't have liked that...

I'm no pro, but I'd say ease down the hill & punch the gas when the rear tries to come over. A front locker would be a requirement if the front left was off the ground at that point.

Good call on the helmet or that could've really rung your bell!

my 5 year old loves to go "jeepin xj style" not sure if he would like the flop too much if he was in it but he did like this video

that looked like an impossible obstacle, looks like you did a great job of trying not to flop and koodos to the spotter that saw the potential mishab and got on the other side of the jeep through the second part

The bicycle helmet thing has really caught on around here, we don't wear them all of the time on the trail but when we are on a obstacle we do. That wasn't my rig, I wish it was! Thats a built to the hilt 90 XJ with a 44/9 set-up, locked front and spooled rear.

Matt is a very experienced wheeler who has built several rigs, Gabe is the spotter and he is a Yota man but we still like him:D

Matt or I either one will let our kids ride through any of the stuff that might result in a flop, no need in scaring the crap out of them while they are young.

Matt plans on building both of his sons rigs when they are old enough.

I have seen two flops on coming off that rock. Both were SWB rigs and the result were pretty much the same. I did see one SWB make it in the winter of 09 but I didnt have a good angle (maybe memory?) to say just what his tire placement was coming off the big rock. That video is the first LWB I have seen try it.

A lot more folks have crossed body shop without damage than that rock.

The big rock is one heck of a lot higher than it looks in the video.

Gotta love all the Youtube spotters.

For those familier with Crozet that was Lower Sphincter not Body Shop.

I should have been to the right a little more.

That obstacle is xj doable. And I will do it.

By the way my spotter did say to gas it.

We all wear helmets. Crozet it's mandatory on the Red's. I just go ahead and wear it most of the time.

Hey at least you were on a decent obstacle and have a good story to tell! :greensmok

Anything you would change in the exo cage to prevent the damage the rig got?

LOL, the armchair spotters sure were strong with this one! This was a challenging line and you took it! Props to you for pushing the limits with your very well built rig!

I give you props for pushing the limits of your rig; as I said on pirate, I defintely would add provisions for a 5 point harness, but other than that you didn't do anything 'wrong'. Keep building up the rig!

Someday, I'd be glad to come out sometime with you to prove that this obstacle is 'XJ capable'. :scottm: (only after I follow you down it)

Well I am making changes. It's actually a hybrid cage with roof penetrations for the rear. The biggest compromise was around the doors. As I wheel with my boys all the time I must be able to go back and get them should the need arise. I knew that if there were something major it may damage the rig beyond repair but I'd be able to get the boys out of the back.

That rock that hit at the top of the b pillar hit at the weakest spot on the cage and it only came in a little bit. Chris ar Crozet gave me a great idea on how to fix it. And strengthen it and be able to access, but it will be a little more limited.

Some people are scared of stuff because they might roll. I'm not. I always push my rig body damage be damned. I always try the most difficult stuff just to see if I can do it.
