You can get glass lensed ones, maybe $2 more than the plastic ones lol. And yea I just realized those are the 4546 enclosures, not 6054.

But yes, sadly, you must hack up the back of your header panel and/or radiator support. Unless you can get a hold of some mini cooper projectors, but they are sooo hard to find.

I never saw the mini cooper projectors in person; are they really smaller? I'd love to a pic of them out of the car.

Most projectors come in a fairly generic size (although I've seen some larger ones - the Infiniti Q45 'gun' projectors come to mind). I know hella makes smaller bi-xenons projectors but they cost an arm and a leg. The original 350z projectors were the smallest oem projectors I've see and used to date, but they were single beam, and the light output wasn't anything worth writing home about. There was a reason I switched from the 350z retro to the FX bi-xenon retro in my WJ. So it's safe to assume if anyone wants bi-xenons in their XJ they better be prepared to do some cutting hehe.

BTW. You can see pics of both of my WJ headlights here. The top ones are the FX projectors I'm using now. The bottom ones are my old 350z projectors (I sold them earlier this year)

Yea the mini cooper projectors are super small. Regular size lense, but the depth is unbelieveable. I've been looking on ebay for a long time, and never ran across a pair for a decent price. Most are the entire enclosure for an arm and a leg.

NO! I'm blown, I just realized they were only single up until '08 I believe. So the new ones are bi, but probably a lot bigger too. Man this sucks... there's tons of single xenon projectors that could match up to that... My hopes and dreams are shattered.

I know man. It totally blows, but imagine my options 4 years ago (when I started researching retros). Bi-xenon projectors cost a fortune back than because they were super rare. At least they're affordable these days. Its worth taking a stab at a DIY retro... as long as you're willing to do some cutting that is

What bulbs are those? It also looks like you have your numbers backwards. It should be 170/100 watt... the high beam wattage comes first.

You also might want to check the aim. From what I see, unless the fence is lower than the ground the vehicle is sitting on they are aimed a bit low.

They are IPF H4's. Yes, I mis-typed that lol. 170/100.

The aim is low as I didn't want to blind the PISS out of any oncoming traffic lol. We have lots of hills around here, and I get blinded nightly on the back roads. The fence is higher than where the Jeep was sitting. I may get another wall shot tonight. It's hard to find a place with level ground, a fence or a wall, and no lights!

There's no clear cut answer to that question. The older McCulloch Bohmen ballasts had water issues, and they were often dubbed the best aftermarket HID kits out there (so can imagine what their competition was like). There were also stories of engine bay fires caused by their ballasts (so again, can imagine what their competition was like).

Today's aftermarket ballasts seem to be better because you don't hear the same horror stories that often... but that doesn't mean they don't happen (no two aftermarket HID kits are alike afterall). Honestly, the biggest problems you see today with aftermarket HIDs are bulb (lifespan, and wrong Kelvin), and install (wrong headlight = glare) related.

The only real water issue would be surrounding DIY retros. If you're cramming projectors into your headlights than you need to seal the headlight assembly properly or your headlights will fog up (but that's a given).

In the end, if you're really concerned with water issues - stick with oem parts.

There are a couple writeups around on how to make your ballasts waterproof. But like said you have to do it right so they don't overheat/catch fire etc...

Ah, I hate most the people at that place. They all drive around in their 4 banger ricers and really bother most of us who live here. You should see Route 100 when their classes let out. It's basically an attempt at "Fast and the Furious" ... so sad.
