Hella actually does make aftermarket HID kits (oem kit matched with a reflector suitable for an HID source). They offer their Micro DE, FF 200 , Rallye 4000 FF, and FF 1000 with a xenon option, BUT I think they're all labeled for offroad use only.
I'm not sure about HIDs on the Hella 500 housing. The setup wouldn't be DOT approved, and since most people mount their 500s at bumper height, you could become the target of some unhappy cop having a bad day. My headlights are DOT approved, but my fogs are not; however, they're so low to the ground (and aimed down) that they don't bother anyone.
If the Hella 500 uses H3 bulbs than you'd most likely have to use -eeek I can't believe I'm saying this - an aftermarket HID kit with a Mini H3C bulb to maintain a similar focal point. Rebased H3 HID bulbs have a different focal point than Mini H3C bulbs. BTW. here's a difference between the two.
my old aftermarket mini H3C VS my rebased H3 Philips ultinon
