I failed the biennial smog check bad enough to be deemed a gross pulluter

I researched and posted in OEM tech. Got some good info, but I think there may be a little more knowledge out there. The general consensus is that I am running too rich. Any more things to look at before I go back for another check?

Thanks guys,

I had the same thing happen to me. Ended up being a bad O2.

Im really thinking about driving my Jeep out here to school and getting it registered in CO. Wont have to worry about smog then. :yelclap:

The most common cause is the converter. Playing in the rocks tend to "hollow out" the converter. When your converter is pulled , you will probably see clear through it. When you replace the converter, drive at least20 miles to "cure" it. Replace the o2 sensor.Drive and shut it off 3-4 times for the computer to "learn" the new o2 sensor.Verify EGR is working with good vacuum hoses. Make sure your XJ is good and warmed up for the test.
My Renix passed with 282k after going this route.

I did the shotgun approach to mine, but that was in part due to it being new to me.

FWIW here's what I replaced and my numbers pre- and post- repairs: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=915880

Mine's a '94 pushing 170k

Like Lodi Jim said, run it at least 20 miles and get your engine up to operating temperature before smogging it if you replace the cat. I ran mine up Hwy 17 before I went in for mine retest after replacing everything.
