Grin's WJ Build Thread

negative, ghostrider, the compass is shit...

Updates?
Progress?
Set-backs?

yes, yes, and yes.

My weekend was supposed to be a kid and wife free fab fest -- wife is skiing and kids were supposed to be having sleepovers with the sister/grandparents - kid no. 2 decided to get sick and wreck the plan... wrenched anyways, and took no.2 to the g-rents this afternoon...

Frank Z blessed me with some plasma work earlier in the week and melted off all of the JK brackets, save the lower control arms, and I ground everything flush today:

Today I also cut off the rear LCA mounts and got them painted up:

and got the rear axle under the heep, sprung under its own weight, and the coil mounts tacked on:

along with securing some nuts for the spring retainers to the underside of the buckets:

with some luck, she'll be on all four tires manana.:guitar:

Man, Chris ain't foolin' around with this build.

And not a 'nilla in sight. Might have to remedy that somehow............ :shhh:

Well, I worked without Nillas today... and without lunch for that matter. After taking yesterday off to play with the kids and watch some football, I took today off of work to honor the good Dr. and do some more wrenching/melting...

After measuring about a dozen times from every conceivable angle, I melted the truss/UCA mount on this morning... then I cut it back off, since my UCA's were too long to work with it in that position ... Oh well, I got to inspect my welds, they penetrated nicely. Take two, cooked on the coil buckets and the truss a second time:

Out with the old (D44a):

In with the new (JKD44):

After some paint and a lot of grunting...:

Added some Ford blue (just for Yella, and cause its the only hi-heat enamel I had around...):

and, holy crap, its sitting on four (crappy) tires!:guitar::

I f'd up the shock mounts before I came in for the night, so I'll need to re-visit those. Plus, I think I'm going to try some longer shocks... as it is I'll have about 5 inches of compression, but only a couple of droop, and I'd honestly like to go the other direction if those are my numbers. Still need to get the brakes, e-brakes and sway bar worked out, but the back is getting close to done! :peace:

What length are those rear bilsteins? If they're 12" then I'd be interested in them.

What size tires are those, it doesn't look nearly as tall as I was imagining.

And, just to be a dick, did you need me to bring over some tissue? You know, to wipe the boogers off the axle. :D

Seriously though, it looks good man.

Crane did all of the geometry thinking for him, so you would have to ask them. My guess is they set it up fairly neutral. Chris, hurry up and flog on that thing so we know how it performs. :D

I have a permanent sinus infection...

I'll check on the Bilstien length, dutch, I'm going to see if Clayton will let me pay the freight and swap me for something longer. If not, I'll shoot you a note.

Tires are 285/70/16's, but the procraps in the rear measure 31, while my retreads in front are a hair over 32... I'll be picking up some true 33's sometime in the near future. The front is sitting at perhaps 3", the rear at a little less than 5... I'm thinking of throwing a 2" puck in front and a 3/4" puck in back... we'll see.

Yes, I trust Clayton has done the math on the anti-squat.

I'm trying my damn'dest to get this thing road worthy before Feb 4, as we're taking a family trip to Steamboat, and I know I'd at least enjoy the dual climate control... I'm betting I don't make it.

very cool. its looking great chris. you keeping those wheels?
have you thought more about what tires to run since we talked?

If you're going 33's and have some scrilla I recommend the Duratracs, I ave yet to talk to somebody who hasn't liked them. Ofcourse I'm also a huge BFG KM1 fan, but I guess those are getting to be a bit harder to come by now a days.

Jim -- I think I have both axles sold, but I had you on my mind if not... they're 3.73, but if you're upping your tire size at all, you'd want a bit more gear. I'll be in touch if they don't sell this week.

Duratracs -- for the 2 weeks I had a set on the XJ, I really liked them (on road). I bought them too early  its either duratracs or trxus, and given what I've heard about the balancing nightmares of trxus, it'll likely be a set of Duratracs... I need another month or so to get the scratch together though.

Mike, I'm thinking I'm keeping the wheels, unless I come across a screaming deal on some Moabs... Not sure I want to move to 17" though, and that's what the JK moabs are.
