Low buck Eaton M90 into a Xj... (renix)
Thanks to those that got me in the ballpark and started. I've been trolling the net in general and jeep forums for a while gathering info. This is my first boost project, I wanted to experiment a bit, don't take anything here as word. This will be be my winter Rig in the near future and a new summer toy with boost will follow =;) . Really wanted some more pulling power to move the sleds around, and piss an import or two off.The roots style seem to fit the bill for the torquey low reving 4L.
Finally starting this project after collecting parts over the summer. ebay is my new friend. Normal Jeep related fixes, rust, new floor! , exhaust front to back, rad swap and remove closed loop collant bottle, and a gas tank replacement all pushed this back a bit. I mention Rust?
So far my list is as follows:

Grab one M90 from early 90's ford supercoupe ,check
Reailize you should have got more parts to make life easier, dohoo !
Grab M90 intake plemium, blower cap and bypass valve, check
Grab donor XJ for parts with a 4L for later build up and rough layout, check
Makeup some kinda braket to hold it on donor XJ. , almost check ver 1 done.
Toss the Fan/Ac Bracket, now in the way. ( see below)
Install twin electric fans and control, ,almost check
Grab one Vortec FMU and install, check
Grab and install Boost gauge , check
Make up transsion plate for Jeep TB to Ford intake., check

Outatanding tasks
Figure out how the extend, and or replace Throttle cable, hmmmm. Way too short. Newer HO Xj's is longer will try that first.
Have two intercoolers to try and fit and plumb. Closer now that I have a rough sitting postion for the blower.
Tap and thread mounting plate for final mounting and fit spacers under blower.
Add Pulley to clear under the water inlet, get belt sizing and make usre it will work.
Move battery, almost check. Know it can't stay, will move to the air box side once moved to my Jeep.
Move some wiring behind the current battery location to clear intake and TB..

Played with a couple mounting locations and settled on this one for simplicity and room.
I have seen the magnassen (SP) style that is on the intake side, the stock M90 ( read cheap) is too long. Their setup uses a stubby drive in the front. It would have been a good spot, but also rule out an intercooler.
The XJ has less under room than a YJ. Thanks again to Bear for some advice. http://home.macatawa.com/~harley89/charger.html . I can't place it in the same location because of hood clearance. It has to sit down much lower to keep the steathy look. ( aka no hood scoop). I'm tossing the AC for now but might incorporate it later as I might have room depending how the blower tube route, and assuming I could put a belt on it.
Stay tuned.

Any updates on this? I just picked up the complete intake system from and 89 supercoup and am going to put it on my stroker. Did you get the inter cooler in and plumbed yet?

Hey
not been playing for a whiel, snow on the grouind, been sleddin! and eating my toy budget..
I do have the brace finished, pulled my spare 4L for final mock up. I have a small intercooler that I mounted behind the bumper.
I took off the big threaded nut off the blower cap revealing the small threads. I need a boot that would come off on a 90 and point down towards the alternater. Figure one weekend when the snow melts...
Can't wait!

If you got all the plumbing with the SC that IC would be ideal and use to 15psi in the v6. Reusing the end colars and some fresh pipe.
I thought about the same and wanted to keep her stealthy ehehe
The IC with the scoop would work. Would be enough room on the passenger side near the back of the hood. Hmmm making me think now, would save a lot of running of tube and did need come back over the rear of the engine to get the clearance in the XJ. Could always put a small electric fan on it too.
I had it standing up just behind the license plate. There was plenty of room. The intercooler is from a daytona turbo, the dimensions are about the same as the Ford Sc but has room I can get a hose clamp on it and the outlets well close...It's was a freebie from a buddy building a porche vortec blower setup for his 928. He upgraded to a Volvo 740s intercooler and is now in the process of mashing two together with custom end tanks as he's seeing too much loss across it. The Volvo IC was only setup for 300hp.
I'm in the shop this mornign and might snap a few pics of the bracket on the motor. It's out now and on an engine stand.

Took some new pics today, look under the jeep page. Spare engine mounted on the engine stand
All this rain, getting motivated to get boost now, snow is a melting.

Yo this is fricken bad ass idea, I have been researching all I can on this project but its kinda hard to find stuff that hasnt been done before. I really want to do this to my xj but I have some questions first.

How did you remove your coolant bottle? Could you build more of those mounts? Is your tension pulley now where your fan used to be? What all do you have to relocate in the engine compartment? What else would you need other than what you have listed? How are you going to tune your engine?

I'm sure that I have more I just cant think of any now.
Keep up the good work.

please bust out your mad msPaint skillz and make us a blueprint for the bracket. or if you have autocad, i guess that would work too

I'd also be interested in a write-up, pix, and maybe drawings when you're done. I'd like to do something similar, but I'd prefer to use a Whipple (I'm just funny that way...) and probably fab up an intake sometime - but why reinvent the wheel, unless you improve upon it? There's no reason that I couldn't use your work as a baseline...

5-90

I traded my blower for a set of hummer beadlocks but the m90 is still going on my buddies yj so I'll take pics as the project progresses. Nothing to report yet though. I'm still interested to see how gbaronetXCR's build up goes.

im currently collecting parts for a m90 blown stroker. you guys are my heroes.

i want to see what happens when 5-90 tries it, being in the top caliber of intellegent people on this board :)

someone who kicks more @$$ at desktop dyno than I should see what kind of power this would make.

hmmm... is the m90 the best avalible junkyard supercharger for a 4.7 jeep motor? what should the target compression ratio be?

Gimme the numbers, I'll tell you voids I need filled. I can email a copy of the dyno report to you when it's done. I've got Desktop Dyno 2000 - I'm saving up for a copy of Dynomation...

5-90

This is an awesome setup! Great pics! I'd love to get some information on the bracket design so I can make one for myself.

I'm actually looking at running this charger on a 4.7L stroker in an SJ Cherokee... any idea how far I would have to stray to make it work with a carb?

lets say dino's stroker makes 270hp, an m90 is what, 5-6psi? thats 25-30% increase in power right? that means a streetable 350hp jeep? glad i got the d44.

hey guys, snow is melted and time to play with boost.
I'll try and get some of this laid out on print if you guys want.
No cad here.
I have the Blower top off and removed the big thread nut from the supercoupe part. Picked up some 3" tube and need to figure out how to connect this thing. I refue to pay $100 for a 90 degree boot. I'll try and fab one first.
I've been a little slow doing it cuz the old girl sounds like a bag of hammers. Once I have the cap bend doe I'll pull the mount and tear into the donor motor.
Rough layput will have the battery where the airbox is. Move the coil pack and the relays behind the headlight.
I've alredy tossed the fan and went electric only, gave me a bit more room.

hmm... while youre at it put the battery in the back = weight distribution.
