What will they do with all of those people!?
I can;t imagine what they are going through.
Every thing you have is washed away and you are stuck wadding in a cespool of dead bodies, human waste, and industrial chemicals!
The worst is yet to come, desease and sickness not unlike the plague in midevil europe are next!

I sit here dumbfounded by the sights I see on the news.
I used to live there, I just can't believe what I am seeing.

My prayers go out to everyone who is in that mess!
I wish I had the resorces to go down and do something personaly.

It will be YEARS before that area is back to normal.

Just think, yesterday, I was bellyaching to Kid that I don't have the money to get my new axles done before Moab, What do I have to worrie about?
My stuff is still at my house and I am not wadding around in shit waist deep!

Good God!, be safe everyone down there.

good news is the water quit rising and i believe they are working on busing everyone else out of there

I agree... Kinda makes you realize that life isn't as bad as you once thought.
BUT does anyone think that the world is gonna throw fundraisers and relief supplies our way. Like we did with the Tsunami... HELL NO!!!!
Pretty sad irony.....

Actually some countrys have offered, but we are not asking for help yet. They are moving a lot of people here to Texas. Very sad to watch, may get to help, they were asking everyone on post to give their expertise listed in case they need more help.

yeah if some countries do offer help, they may have an hidden agenda behind it, it won't come from the heart probably.
Yeah?

And there's no hidden agenda to U.S. foreign aid?

Heck, Venezuela has already offered to send help and supplies, and that idiot Pat Robertson just finished mouthing off that we should assassinate their president. Maybe Chavez wants to give us the impression he's not such a bad guy. Or, just maybe, when the SHTF he's a human being with a heart and just wants people to have a blanket to sleep under.

I dunno. But after all the disaster relief the U.S. has sent all over the globe for so many years, if any countries want to help out in this mess I think we would be idiots to decline because we think there might be a "hidden agenda."

Well said.
and prayers go out to all in the afflicted areas.

I've been talking with the wifey and profs at school about taking a month or so off, to go down and lend a hand.

If you've got enough to live well, you've got enough to help your fellow.

And where are the troops to help rescue people and patrol the lawless downtown?

Oh that's right. They're in I freakin raq!

There's supposedly enough Natl Guard troops to make up for any deployed overseas...

Keep in mind that a disaster of these proportions should not be used as a platform for political dueling...

There are still people in deep shit downthere and they need help irregardless of source...

I really feel for the children, elderly, handicapped and those that had no means of escaping the city when told to do so...

All those that stayed by choice are due to realize the errors of their inactions...

If I were in a similar situation and couldn't drive or ride outta town...

I woulda thrown my kid over my shoulder and started hiking...

There's lots of lessons here folks...

Be prepared!

Now I know this isn't going to get a whole lot of fan-fare, and by all means I have a great amount of compasion for everybody that got affected by this catastrophy.

But what do people think about the concept of a sub-sea-level city built in the hurricane-prone gulf coast and do you think its a good idea to rebuild only to risk the same fate again?

I personally think people should get out of these disaster prone areas. Things are not going to get any better as coastal poplulation densities increase. I don't suspect natural disasters are going to stop. Food for thought...not that I want everybody moving to Michigan where the worst that happens is a little snow!

i keep getting sucked into the coverage on the TV like a train wreck. so many lessons to learn, all i have to bitch about today is that i'm too broke to fill both rigs with gas at the current $3.19, before friday payday, when todays price will seem like good news.

this is bringing back some memories of the Haitian exodus of 1989 and 1990. the gulf coast reminds me of a huge refugee camp..

best wishes to everyone down there and also to those who still havent heard from family members down there.

Yup...

Ask anyone in quake ridden California...

Repeat after me: San Andreas fault

;)

whatever.

The San Andreas fault doesn't exist, it's all smoke and mirrors!

There is a hundred major faults in Cal. probably more like thousands. What chapped my buns after the 72 quake in L.A. was a couple of years after the quake, within a mile or two of where the VA hospital sank like 15 feet into the earth, they dozed a couple of dozen hills flat and built houses on them. Double dumb, just asking for it, where were the building code and zoning people when they they authorized that one?
I've often wondered why they keep on allowing mobile homes and wood frame buildings in tornado and hurricane prone areas. Same in flood areas. A wood frame, makes sense in an earthquake area. Seems like they keep on making the same mistakes over and over. A brick building may come down, but it sure takes a lot more to do it. My brick house survived a tornado with minor roof damage, that moved my 45 foot pine tree (roots and all) about sixty feet.
The original build price of the house may be more, if it´s designed to resist high winds, fast moving or high water. But will be safer and most likely easier, cheaper to insure and have a higher resale. In flood prone areas, two floor brick (with some steel re-bar worked in) ought to be the norm.
I´m sure the engineers could design a better house, without breaking the bank. Maybe it´s time to rethink, building design. Maybe prefab, insulated concrete component. A person could build a decent house easy with a few (4,5,6) container sized prefabs, with sub floors for electrical and plumbing. Standardized foundations/anchors, a crane and a few trucks and you could move the house pretty easy if needed. Home dwelling design, really seems stuck in the 19th century.

Memory as long as your...? Err never mind, probably don't have one anyway!

The answer to your freakin ineptness is the base closures and downsizing your brethren have been mandating for over a decade.
