GoldDiggin Build

Nobody ever plans to go over 31s and 3" or regear.

Lunchbox for now to get your feet wet, then you will have money left for larger tires when you decide to upgrade. I wouldn't bother with alloys yet either.

yeah, what skinny said^^^^, he replied when i was typing an Altrocker type respones :D

I wasn't gonna read that until i saw my name all capitalized and stuff...

I fear that the stock axles will not be able to take the abuse of a locker, maybe they will! As of right now I am trying to build a nice foundation for this Jeep (phase 1). I jumped the gun on buying a lift but it is said and done so I am going to live with it. This XJ will be a DD around 80% of it's life and light to moderate trail use the other 20%.
I really like the idea of having a stockish looking XJ that can handle just as well if not better than the monster long arm 35" tire guys.
Im going for more of an overland build, look at the Aussies and see how they build their rigs.
So I will be doing more reading on the lunchbox lockers and what not.
Thanks for the input!

With the better shafts in the 97 up D30's you will have the bigger u joints (297 joints I believe). I ran 36's on them w/ a lunchbox locker and only broke a stub shaft. Once again this also comes with conscious driving and some experience. I really think you will get by fine for years to come on 31's w/ stock shafts. Run stock shafts and if they fail, upgrade then.

Cheese "small capable builds are fun" Man

My advice then, get a pair of uniframe stiffiners(HDO, ruffstuff) aftermarket steering box spacer(home fab, iro?) track bar brace, shackle relocators, as that will provide a great base to build off of and for when you go higher and bigger(there is no "if" lol)
Before I did my 3.5" lift I did the uniframe stiffiners and shackle relocators and its help greatly

I have not had much time to update this thread. With work and the holidays coming up and all.
Well I was able to get the new springs in with out much of any issues. Had to completely rebuild the rear brakes (lines, cylinders, hardware, and drums.)

Got to the front and things started to go down hill a bit. Broke the axle side bolt for the track bar. Did some research and found out that the bolt Chrysler used is a bastard size. I found the best 10 mm I could use and there is still some slop in there.
Also found a bit of play in the ball joints so went ahead and put new ones in. That was fun....
Replaced a broken u joint in one of the axles. The c-clips were so rusted I went ahead and just cut the old joint out with a dye grinder.

I went to remove the frame side mount for the track bar and used the dye grinder again... On one of the bolts there was a smooth "nut" attached to it and for the life of me I could not get a vice grip in there. Why the hell did Chrysler use this?

I will post up some pictures later on. I have a few items on the wish list for right now.
Frame Stiffners(ruffstuff), No lift shackle box(HD), QD sway bar links (jks?), blower motor resistor, Durango Steering Box, locker for the d30.
I hope to snag most of this during black Friday in hopes for some great deals.

Looks like she's coming along nicely!

Thanks a lot "Flex"!
Just received my adjustable LCA from IRO. Just need to find some extra time to swap em in. Maybe while every one is out on Black Friday I will have some garage time. Any good tips/tricks in removing the LCA? I have read a few threads and it seems like it is very possible I will be cutting the bolts out. Ive also read that the bolts are a M14 2.00 or 9/16. Time will tell.

Does any one know of any good black Friday deals for Jeep parts?

I've never had to cut LCA bolts but an impact helps a lot. When you replace your bolts run them from the outside in, I've had a few that came with the bolt ran from inside out and sucks for removal. 9/16 if I remember correctly will work if the stock bolts need replacing. Stock are 21mm.

Not sure on Jeep stuff but RuffStuff and Trailgear are running some great deals in a few days.

I've cut them.

it sucks.

You're best bet is a sawzall blade snuck in there. You'll cut through the metal part of the bushing quick, but the bolt itself is hardened and will strip teeth right off the blade, buy several, and set aside about an hour per bolt.

Dan, your best advice is for me to have a paying membership?

What are the benefits of me being a paying member vs. non paying. Or what does this forum offer that "CherokeeForum" can not give me?

The list is long, first and foremost is the support we give to land use organizations. We give thousands of dollars a year to keep our trails open, we gave $5000 just to the Blue Ribbon Coalition, $1000 to Redbird OHP, amoung several other organizations.

We are a club, not just a forum. We have a board of directors and 10 chapters, each having their own bod.

We have sanctioned events throughout the US.

...and we have stickers. :)

The biggest thing we do with member money is the land use donations. We NEED to keep money flowing to combat the tree huggers so we have places to wheel. It's so common to hear trails being shut down and without support from our side, we would eventually have no place to wheel.

What does Cherokee Forum do?

I have no idea what cherokeeforum does. I use their site also, but I am much more active here on :NAXJA:.
I think I will become a paying member before this year is over. I live in the heart of Indiana and :NAXJA: seems to be very supportive and active here.

This is my first Jeep, first XJ. So I am 100% new to all of this. Steering geometry, heim joints vs. JJ, Jeep Clubs, ect. But I am learning with the help of you guys!

Thanks a lot.

cherokee forum doesn't do anything except generate ad revenue.

we're a club that just happens to use the intarwebs as our meeting forum.

mostly we're jerks that like to hang out around one another. Oh, we also wheel station wagons, we're real good at that.

you'll not fit a cutoff wheel in there, and the LCA mount is actually pretty thin, so a mistake with a cut off disc will see you ruin that quickly.
sawzall is the safe bet.

I told you it sucked.

what does this forum offer that "CherokeeForum" can not give me?

We have free nachos, stickers, sheep and we throw couches in a fire...but not just any fire..THE fire. Get on board, you will be glad you did.

There are at least 4 NAXJA members in Columbus and many others spread all over Indiana. I have been thinking of having a meet and greet sometime in the near future, look for that.
