Going Camping, Back of Jeep or Tent?

Me and a few buddies are all going camping this weekend for a night. Should I bring a small tent, or just spend the night in the Jeep. I've been back there for a while, but never spent the night. Anyone else done it ? Comfortable ? I'd bring a sleeping bag or blankets for some kind of padding from the floor. I just think sleeping in the Jeep would be fun. :) It would also keep me away from any black bears, foxes, wild dogs, raccoons, spiders, ect. LOL

if you are over 6ft tall its a little tough, but i do it every time i go camping. if you dont carry alot of gear with you its not too hard to do.

I did it for about a week last year. It wasn't cold or anything, I was just too lazy to set up my tent. I removed the rear seat, set down a small pad, and it worked well. The only thing was I am 5'11" and I still felt cramped. I had to sleep diagonal, to be even slightly comfortable. If you have a lot of gear, either move it to the front seats or something.

That said this camping trip this weekend... I'll be using my tent with my air mattress... :D

Dude, if you can swing it get an air mattress. Thats as near to a real bed as you can get. I've camped for a long time i learned early that sleeping on the ground sucks, those thin foam pads suck, in a truck sucks. blaise

just take the bottom of the back seat out, push the front seats all the way foward and pack the rear foot wells with all your gear... it's pretty comfy if you bring a few blankets etc for padding, i do it for 1 night trips, anything longer and the tent and air mattress is the way to go.

we have a fold out twin bed at my camp with this perfect sized mattress on it. That's what i'll use and a few pillows, it will be like home. I can say I'm looking forward to this, a whole day of some rather easy trails, and camping out. :)

It isn't comfortable. I would only recommend it if you're drunk so you don't care. If you use the air mattress just leave the hatch open so you can completely stretch out. I've slept a couple of times in the back. Each time my back was totally wrecked the next morning.

X2

I have done this several times and what I have done is use an air mattress in the back of the jeep...with the bottom of the seat out and the front seats pushed forward. Im 6 ft tall and can stretch out comfortably

I slept in the grey one, my buddy and his girl made up the contraption in the blue one.

My son bought a neat air mattress, you pull the plug and it has kind of a spring inside and inflates itself. When your finished you pull the plug again and just roll it up.

I night fish a lot, I usually last until dawn or so, then crash for a few hours in the back of the XJ, with the hatch open. I'm 6'4", my feet hang out the back a bit. I've got a big plastic tarp I can hang over the hatch and stake to the ground if it rains, I use a lot of Mosquito repellent, learned that one the hard way.

It takes me minutes to set up and take down.

I've also got an elastic pistol belt and a holster that sits right where my belt buckle would be. A compact nine fits in there just fine. I never sleep on my stomach so that isn't an issue. About the same reason I never zip a fart sack closed. You just might have to bail out quick and be ready to fight instantly.

I once pulled over at a rest stop and tried to catch a nap on the bench seat of my pick up. The noise that woke me up was from some fool trying to break into my truck. I cleaned the fog off the inside of the window and showed him the business end of my 12 gauge. I sure am glad I took it out form behind the seat and laid it on the floor before I went to sleep. He got big eyes looking down the barrel of that twelve cylinder bore and decided to move along.:) I'm sure glad I didn't have to pull the trigger, it probably would have blown my eardrums out.

I was out hunting with a buddy and his family, he in a VW camper, me and my brother in a VW buggy. My brother and I decided to sleep on the ground. Somebody came into our camp at zero dark thirty and started stealing our gear. My buddy hollers from inside the camper, who's there? He then yells get out of our camp. Somebody says F*** you and the next thing I hear is four pistol shots. There were three of them, two tripped over me and and my brother on the way out of camp, we got a couple of licks in. He didn't even bother to open a window, he just shot through the side of the bus LOL.

As noted it depends on how tall you are. When I was married me and the wife would sleep back there for days on end while camping. I've got good quality tents now and it would depend on my mood if I decided to sleep in the back or not.

When I did camp while wheeling I'd simply carry a tarp with me that Iwould cover my gear up with at night. It's not going to hurt it to sit outside for a bit.
