I am putting 4.56 gears in my xj D30/8.25. I have all the parts to rebuild both axles including a Detroit and alloy axles for the rear. I was pretty excited until I called the shops around fort worth and found they want $350 per axle to set them up. I think am going to tackle this job myself. I'm an aircraft mechanic, so I hope that means I'm fairly competent. :eeks1: I am a little tentative because its the first set of gears I've ever done myself. Is there anyone in the DFW area that has done this before. Any help would be appreciated.

There are some pretty good write up's available online, you may check some of them out. If you are an aircraft mechanic you would probably be more used to the very tight tolerances required, and the sometimes tedious work of setting gears up. I have tried several times, and get it right about half the time. So I continue to just pay someone to do it for me.

I would continue shopping around personally. If you are willing to take the axles off of the Jeep, some places will do it for much less. I had this done about 4 weeks ago here locally and they charged me $150 labor for each axle. I just had to take a day off of work to remove the axles myself and then reinstall them when they were finished. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it to save hundreds of dollars in labor to pay the shop to take apart the axles.

I am in the same boat as you....

I have read all the write ups online. I think its something I can do. I will try it in a few weeks, if I get some time off of work. If I figure it out, I will be here for the next guy who needs help. thanks guys

That's great. If you can get that down, then you can take side jobs doing gears, and make a little extra change yourself. You can be the reasonably priced alternative to the local shops.
