The factory gas skid is far from HD. They are very light and pretty thin. If you want something that will hold up. I recomend the DPG Rock Attack Skid.

If you can find a stock one for cheap, then throw it on. Otherwise I would save for something that will actually protect your plastic tank. Most recyclers, other then the u pull its, will want alot for it.............:lecture:

I was afraid of that. The reason I asked was because I saw a nice gas tank skid on 99 a while back and the owner said it as factory so mabay he was just crazy or there were two models of skids used in those years probably with the flimsy tin one being more common.

I've found the stock '97+ Skid do just fine on both my current, and previous XJ... But it does depend on how ya wheel... And the price isn't bad - I picked mine up for $25, but it was beat to the point it wouldn't fit... Fixed that and it works great...

Will.

I'm going to have to disagree. The OEM gas tank skids are very heavy duty and in fact will hold up to dropping your rig on them. If you go ask them at Pull-n-save to get you one before they punch a hole in it to drain the gas then that is your best bet. They sometimes can be idiots there and most of the skids have a hole punched thru them. Try Action Auto also at Tower Road and Colfax, they had a couple there last time I checked. It's just west of Tower and is easy to miss as there doesn't look like there is anything back there.

The '97 plus skids are not even close to the same class as the older body style. I've owned both, and had the stock unit on my '94 with no problems. But the '97 up skids are just not up to the task. You can not drop your rig on these. This rock pushed his OEM gts into his tank (which in turn blocked the fuel pickup). They are not HD units by any means.

I was going to get a factory skid for my '97 but the only ones I could find were over $200  so I went with Tomken.JohnJohn( www.bigoffroad.com ) got me a real good deal on it.Its taken a few hits and is holding up great.

Lash me with some wet noodles. Yes I got caught up in reading too fast and have to admit I was thinking of the earlier model stuff. Interestly enough the skids for the ZJs will fit the later model XJs with slight modification and are quite a bit heavier duty. I have one here at the house in Aurora if you are interested.

thanks for all the help guys and i will be around alot more now that my cherokee is finally locked and ready for some of the harder trails. Also Hoss I am interested in that zj skid do you have any pics or know if it will work with a trailed hitch if so I will come pick it up sometime. thanks again for all the input
