Poway Ca,
Here you go... It's a Full width 9" from a 78 bronco. The front will be done in 3 weeks.
I changed my plans of going with the long chevy springs and 37's after I found lots of little cracks all over, I guess I should wash it underneath better from now on :anon:
I'm will be putting in boxes for the rear shackles to get more droop out of them
Richard, do you have any pics of your boxes so I know where to start :D

Looks good Lee. Now to the front end which is going to be alot harder, but also alot more rewarding once it's done. You will love the manual hubs and having the security of a much stronger axle. When do you think I could get those 8" rims? Chuck really wants my 10" that are now on my xj. Man your tires stick out just an 1-1/2" or so more on each side than my dana 30/dana 44 xj stock axles with the 10" rims. Wow, those rims are really offset. I know my tires stick out way wide on my 85' CJ7 that I just pickup up this weekend on 37" mtrs and full width 76' chevy front dana 44/78' ford 9" (XJ 3" rear springs). See:

I just traded my 94' Wrangler for this bad boy, wow it is different from than anything else I have ever had. I might be selling the xj next Spring to get some $ for a trailer. This jeep pulled my Wrangler 3 miles or so through Fordyce from the winch hill 1 bypass till we got off the trail after the twin river crossing.

looks good! so did you decide to stick with 35s? I think that would be a good choice, there is next to nothing in the Sierras that a double locked XJ on 35s can't do, and 37+ just opens up a whole new level of building and breaking.

what's the backspacing on the wheels? it doesn't look that wide...

also, you should "shave" that 9". It's really easy with a stamped steel housing like your 9" and my Toy axle. You may benefit close to an inch, depending on angles.

oh, and you can now forget about Winch Hill 3 at Fordyce ;) : http://www.xjdb.com/albums/upload/P8140759.jpg

Those are stock bronco wheels......I don't know the offset. The rear is now 5" wider then before. My cousin made it it thru winch hill 3 in a full size bronco:wow: so I'll have no problem. See the rock under the guy squating down...........you ride the highline :D

I tried that one, with Jes spotting me, and it was a no-go. The left tire kept slipping off a rock that made the right tire slip off that line. I think my problem is I shoulda come at it more from the left, I had first tried to make the squeez, so I wasnt' really lined up the best for that crack line.

then after I didn't make that, I got talked into trying the LEFT LINE up the face :D that was interesting :)

I don't remember how wide I am exactly, but probably about the same as you, and WinchHill3 has been the only spot on Fordyce or Rubicon where the extra width was a major problem, and certainly plenty of times it has been a benefit.

this is how wide I am (front is 3" wider than rear):

Here's a couple of pics of my shackle boxes. Not sure that's what you were looking for... The only thing is that they move the shackle back, and in your case that might give the shackles a bad angle angle-judging by the pics above.

Oh, and I've also put in a brace on the outside of the bracket that goes from the stock location mounting bolt to the new modified location for added strength. I've had no issues with this yet (knock on wood).

Actually, you woulda made it if you were smoother on the gas and brake. I mean, how do you stall an engine in an automatic anyway?! :D

Lee, looks good. Those tires don't stick out much at all. Not sure why Billy's full width look so much wider, must be narrower axles on a bronco than an F250.

Summit sells a great weld-on axle truss for the 9 for ~ $55. I highly recommend it to beef up the tubes so they don't flex and tweak the carrier. Just be really careful welding it so you don't heat it up too much. Do about 2" at a time and alternate sides letting the areas cool down/

YO Capt. how much lift did you get? Where did you buy those shackles? I am planning on adding extra lift to my XJ and that would work great instead of adding blocks.

are you running 67"-69"Chevy axles?

I don't know who you are asking, but my 85' CJ7 has a front 1976 Chevy front dana 44 with ford spindles and rotors for 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern and the same rear axle you have, the full width 78' ford 9". Nice setup. I've only driven it on the street back from Fordyce because I was more concerned on getting my 94' YJ off of the trail and still make the trade with the guy for the CJ. The only thing I miss is the overdrive, with 5.89 gears you can only go so fast. My rig has a SM465 tranny which is nice and strong, but pretty clunky, no hydraulic assist here like in my previous AX15 or AX5 Wranglers I had years ago.
The Jeep drives great with the full width and extended wheel base of 102". I know you will love the ride when its done Lee.

The shackles are part of the Full-Traction kit. With the custom box I got about an extra 1.5" of lift- which was just enough. The back end is a little higher than the front unloaded, fully loaded it sits level.

$$$$$
is what it boils down to. 9's are a dime a dozen, my friends use them so I have parts avaliable on the trail if needed.
I only paid 418.00 for a bronco, stripped the running gear, then turned around and sold the bronco for 400.00 without the running gear :D :D
