Some time in Jan. I'm going to do the hi-steer but there's to much stuff going on now....
(Damn holidays......) :laugh3:

It looks great Lee. I know you've put a lot of hard work on it the last few months. I might need some help with mine. I'm going to be running those same axles, but leafs in the front of my 78' f-150 hp 44 camper that came with leafs stock. What gears do you have in there now? Any lockers?

Do you think I can use the lower control arms mounts to run my rear mount for some leaf springs or will I be into the diff? I know waggy 44 have a mount as part of the diff area. How well were you able to center the front axle? How much does it stick out? I know rim offset has a lot to do with this.

holy steering angle, batman

Don't be wheeling that way until the high steer is on. your tre at the pitman is MAXED. got a bit more fab work to do, but it's a great start lee.

WHY did you mount the radius arms so low? you'll surely drag those over every rock in sight. those stock arms have been known to bend also.
They are about 3" lower than before so I will have to watch out for them BUT the arms ar going to be plated with 1/2 plate to fill in the taper inside the arms then another 1/4 on top that to box them in.
My cousin has a full size bronco (4800+ lbs) that he MOBS!!! thru fordyce and has yet to bend the radius arms and he smacks the hell out of them

So...when do I get to see that 4800 lb hunk of junk in action?

:D

Wow, Richard thats quite a bit of restraint there, I thought I could hear you post before I read it, as I came down the thread :)

Lee it looks good with that 44 in there, but I too am a little concerned about how low the rear mount is, three inches is a lot, but the 3 inches down 8 inches back is a lot more, it should ride like a champ though :) I am sure you had some compromises though without turning the knuckles, well I don't know how much castor you can dial in with radius arm bushings.

Stronger than my frontend for sure :)

Since you mentioned using the 30 degree Chevy 1 ton tie rod end, I must tell you of my story. I built my 44 front end a few years ago and used a TJ pitman arm reamed to accept a Full Sized Chevy tie rod end. I ran a drag link straight to the top of a high steer arm and have been running the thing like that ever since. See http://www.madxj for an article with many pics. Well, while tooling down a gravel road after wheeling this fall, I suddenly had no steering! Turned out that tie rod end came apart!!! I was shocked and disappointed figuring the thing must have simply broke. However, after cleaning it up and studying the parts, there is quite a groove wore in the stud right where it changes to a ball. There is also quite a bit of wear on the part of the shell that is closest to the threads. The cupped shaped floating piece between the ball and the shell broke in two and allowed the stud to separate from the shell. I really don't understand the exact cause, but I am quite sure running on it for years at a pretty steep angle took it's toll. It did not seem loose as in wore out the last time I greased things either, so it appears to be more a break than simply wore out. I would post pics if anybody has a place to host them. Jeff

Surely they are an improvement over the arms he was running. Who were those made by Lee? Oh I remember...

JEEP! :D

You missed it, but Lee had 4800 lbs. plus the kitchen microwave on the roof when we ran Fordyce. Good thing he's upgrading!!!

Can't wait to see it around town!

Wow, you should have kept the roof rack Lee if you knew you were upgrading axles. :) I really think that's why you broke on Fordyce, maybe also the open front 30 and having to rely more on the ford 9". Did you have alloy shafts on the ford 9" during that run or after? Who did you get the alloys from anyways? I'm not questioning them, just wondering. I still have your ford 9" in my garage under my CJ next to my Tj dana 30/hp 44/full width ford 9". I live in a gated townhouse community and have so many violations again my CC&Rs. My garage is really full. Does anyone need anything? I have lots of tires too for sale, mostly 35's.
