Full-case locker or lunchbox?

Is it a 29 spline rear? Powertrax No-Slip. Abused mine for like 5 years and 50k miles, and it outlasted at least one 4.56 gearset.

Since you are regearing I would recommend a full case locker. I run grizzly lockers front and rear and love them. They are completely quiet and just work. No crazy unloading like a Detroit. And no loud ratcheting like a lunchbox.

Thanks very much. Exactly the sort of information I was looking for.

i'd save your money for an arb or something, it's well worth having a selectable in the rear, more so than the front.
But if not, just get a lunchbox.

I know you've already received large numbers of replies, but I'll toss in my 2c. ARB all the way. I've been very happy with the operation - unlocked it's completely benign. Locked, it's completely locked. I have found that switching them on and off becomes very intuitive quickly. I had ARB in my D30, 8 1/4 and now in the D60.

But the overriding reason is ARB's quality of service. I've had two occasions to need service on my lockers - neither of which were the fault of the locker (bad gear installation in both cases). ARB's speed of service, and willingness to help (FedEx'd a replacement overnight) has exceeded the levels of service I've seen from nearly any other manufacturer. Other folks on NAXJA have had the same experience.

Yes, you pay extra for ARB, but I believe you are getting a superior product.

put 10k on the aussie in my 29 spline 8.25 , zero issues and was invisible, was fine in the snow to unless you wanted to have fun

Locked, it's completely locked. I have found that switching them on and off becomes very intuitive quickly. I have an OX in my D30, 8 1/4 and now in the D44.

But the overriding reason is OX's quality of service. I've had one occasion where I needed service and a new center pin. OX's speed of service, and free replacement part to help (FedEx'd a replacement overnight) has exceeded the levels of service I've seen from nearly any other manufacturer. Other folks I know have had the same experience.

Fixed with my experience and .02 :smoker:

if you have money , go full case. if you don't, go lunchbox. its literally that simple. If budget <300$ then lunchbox, if budget > 650 then full case . remember full case means resetting gears and probably do new master install kit at that time.

hes saying that its cheaper/easier to do a gear and case locker install at one time, then having to dive into it more than once, doing each seperately.
exactly. Unless you're already going to be doing the setup and the master rebuild it's not cost effective.

and that.

full case is better than lunchbox almost always. If it's in the budget and you're setting up gears anyway, no reason to keep the factory case.

Don't do a detroit. I hated that thing on the road, but it was living behind a 5 spd.
it would randomly unlock and lock and attempt to kill me with an unintended lane change.

What if ... 300$<budget< 650?

for an opposite opinion, I loved my detroit behind an automatic. it was absolutely great on the road and always locked up offroad. I liked it so much I'm thinking about getting a grizzly for my new setup. I'll take a full case auto rear any day of the week. you don't have to think about it or pay through the nose for it like a selectable. and I cant stand my buddies lunchbox rear. clickety clacking all over the road driving me nuts.

buy used parts. I got my detroit off blondejon for $280, ran it hard for 2 years, and now it's living on under someone elses jeep. not a peep or slip the whole time

What if ... 300$<budget< 650?

buy a lunch box locker and still have enough money for beer. duh

My experience is the same....

Money's not really the issue, as much as value for the money. To me, a selectable's just not worth the investment and I'm not really considering it. I've had a lunchbox locker in the rear for years and quickly got used to the occasional jolt when cornering on streets. It's not that big a deal, probably because my tranny's not a stick shift. From what I'm hearing from you guys though, I think that I will pony up the dough for a Detroit full case automatic.

Thanks for the help deciding.
