Full-case locker or lunchbox?

yeah, there's a lockright in my wife's 01 that's an auto. It's totally different than the detroit was in my 5 spd.

auto trans greatly improves auto locker manners.

steering while wheeling is WAY better with a selectable. I had an elocker before i had my auto locker and i miss it every time i drive the thing.

I have not noticed a difference steering offroad with an rear auto locker compared to open. Those with comments about steering difficulty with an auto locker, you are talking about a REAR locker, right?

Even on a soft dirt road, my turning radius is huge with my rear detroit compared to being open. Several switch backs that I could normally just turn and go up I've had to stop and back up.

For me, the final decision to swap to an ARB came when I made a trek up a snowy mountain pass. I was "drifting" every corner on the way up, and it wasn't by choice. The wife was freaking the F out lol.

Agreed.

I have a spartan in my front D60 and an ARB in my rear D60.

I've switched the rear ARB off in the middle of a turn and can IMMEDIATELY tell a difference in my turning radius.

LSD is for street driving dont waste the money. You can find great deals on eaton e-lockers and arb's if you look. Personally id do the e-locker but I've heard the 8.25 version may have some issues ( might be thinking 8.8 though ) but either one will give the best of both worlds open for street snow and non technical trails and locked for everything else.

With a Detroit truetrac LSD in the back would you also have a compromised turn radius?
no.

trutrac isn't exactly your average LSD, and a few people I know that have ran them offroad thought very highly.
it's a torsen style diff.

Well, my rear is already locked with a Detroit and I'm not gonna change it. But once in awhile I think it would be easy enough to swap a different rear axle in for winter, and then back out for wheeling season.

Geez. Now you've got me rethinking this.

THIS!

I agree with the standard as far as selectable/fullcase/autolocker for priority....

Only thing I have noticed over the years it the guys with the ARB lockers are always dicking with the air lines/compressor etc. because they are hitting the switches and they don't lock up & your stuck on an obstacle looking like a clown....

my 8.25 aussie locker is the best part i own
my D30 spartan locker is great too, but much worse manners & a pain to steer etc on the the trail, plus the stick shift etc... I live in PA so no mountain passes to go up in the snow....

IMO, if you have an auto - get the Detroit. I love mine and don't notice any big increase in turn radius...it's not like I have to 3-pt turn every corner. Only downside is off-camber snowy trails, the rear end tries to walk downhill and requires driver attention. The drifting on snowy roads is very predictable and not an issue for me - my family is almost never in the Jeep and I am used to the drifting feeling.
