Fuel tank question

Anyone have a good source for the proper tool for removing a rust seized lock ring on the fuel pump assy for an 87 XJ? I have already had three dry runs at it.

I saw one in the early 2000s at auto zone. Went back for it a few weeks later when I had trouble removing the lockring without damaging it and the sent them back because " nobody needs one".

Eventually got it out with a hammer and screw driver, but felt it could have gone better with the tool.

Forgetting about AUtozone for the moment I'll do a search and try to paste it.

O'Reillys and advance auto show something in their online catalogue.
I'm not sure the link below will work since I'm posting via phone.

The problem is finding the right one. There are doznes of lock rings and lock ring tool styles, each is unique. I tried two universals that do not fit. The Renix tanks also have the welded steel tube(s) in the way sticking up about 6" in the middle so the tools with a crossover in the middle will not work either. The ring tabs vary in location and rings vary in diameter.

Sorry. Had no idea there were that many. I can't seem to find a specific one for the XJ.
The one I saw years ago was closer to a screwdriver with I think two prongs to grab the tabs. It could have worked IMO , so pissed they sent it back before I could buy it all those years ago

My Shelby Cobra replica uses a Ford tank and the ring looks very similar so I am planning to pick up one of these:

Happy to let you borrow it if you don't mind the drive up to SH249 (South of Tomball near the Hewlett Packard campus).

I'd almost be willing to bet money that the ford one, like most ford tolls, only fit fords. There are many new ones for plastic rings, and Google list what must be fifty variations of the old metal rings like the Renix jeeps have :( The Renix ring has 3 tabs at 120 degree angles. That tool is the style we need, but od the slots line up right????

Let me know if it works for yours please.

Google search pulled this up, and it looks like the new lock ring I got from Rock auto for the 87 XJ.

Here is a better picture of the lock ring it needs to fit:

Very little space for just 3 prongs to grab it, and the plate it seals to the tank has about 6" of steel tube going straight up so the across the top tools can not be used at all, must be a side spanner type wrench only with three small prongs in just the right sweet spot and the right diameter. There are multiple diameter lock rings too to add to the shopping fun.

Lang lock ring tool 492? Or something similar?

.

That is the general style needed, but it needs to have 3 tabs just the right size and in just the right spot and be just the right diameter overall for the Jeep rings.

Interestingly this is the same part number for the Ford ring. In fact, if you click on the "applications" tab on the SummitRacing page it lists Ford, Mercury, AMC, Jeep and Lincoln.

I will let you know if the tool I ordered fits.

Awesome!!!!!

Tried PB Blaster 3 times over the last 6 months. No joy. 3 friends of mine tried.

Did you try breaking the rust free with a punch? I've broken probably 15 frozen bolts on this rust heep and the lock ring on my tank was rusted in place until I beat the crap out of it to break the rust free. Honestly, though, if it's that rusty, are you sure the tank is worth saving anyway?

Finally got the fuel pump-tank flange off mine using a 3/8" dia by 6 inch long aluminum (spark proof) rod and a rubber (leaded inside) hammer. Gave up on ever finding a proper tool for removing it. Was about to drop the tank and use it as a boat anchor. Now the fun part, getting the swap wiring, etc right. This should be a joy LOL.
