I need to replace the oring on my fuel tank at the sending unit(it's leaking). Anybody have a P/N for the oring? Any special tools required? Does the tank have to be lowered? I have a '93 with the 4.0L.

You can do this with the tank in. A little lift may make it easier. If all you're replacing is the O-ring, you can probably get the old one off and the new one in without actually removing the sender. You're better off if the tank is nearly empty, because even if it doesn't spill out, the gas will float the sender up a little and make it hard to seat.

If the lock ring is rusty, grease it and the o-ring before putting it back in, and make sure that all three tabs engage before you start to turn it. It can take a couple of tries, and you may wish for a third hand.

If you don't have a brass punch, aluminum also works. Wood will tend to split, but might be possible in a pinch. Just make sure you don't use steel.

I know this is an ancient thread. It is also what the totally useless search engines of today bring up when I try to find the part numbers I know I have posted elsewhere on this forum. So, to deal with the stupid search engine issue, my preferred gasket for this job is an AC Delco/GM o-ring which has tabs to keep the o-ring centered. The part numbers for this gasket are ACD# G10 and/or GM# 22515965.

The P/N is on here elsewhere, but no search engine can find it. I had to go rustling through parts in the shop to find the empty package I marked and saved. The longer I live the more I prefer the old fashioned ways of doing things. Technology impresses me less and less with each new step it takes.

Yes, I am a grumpy curmudgeon. (And if anyone wants to complain about the redundancy they can get off my lawn)
