First Brake Job

Both pairs of shoes are about 0.5-1.0mm away from the drum. So I guess just drive in reverse to work tonight :P

Luckily I live in the city, but in a out of the way area so I should be fine, and weird looks are something Im used to.

Thanks much for all the help, cant wait til I get to make a post saying "I started my ZJ disc conversion and my rotor went through the tire during test drive" probally not, but Ill try and make some more useful contibutions to the forum.

Just remove the drum, adjust the star until you notice the shoes rubbing the drum when you slide it back on...

Only need to drive in reverse for a short distance with the parking brake on I believe........if you drove the entire way, you might need to be changing your shoes again.

get some jack stands under that thing!

You mean those two 6Ton Jack Stand supporting the XJ and Dana35 in the air? The 3/4Ton Jack is just under there for when its time to lower it, not even supporting the pumpkin, not even jacked up. Sorry if that came out sounding kinda ass-ish...

Heres a before photo to back everything up and to keep everyone else from jumping on the bandwagon. Sorry no after photos, I was to excited that my first brake job turned out a sucess.

EDIT: 2Jeeps, four posts and one of them was to say "get jack stands"? Not even a congrats, or great job, just a minor bash?

To everyone else the brakes are adjusted and feel great. Went to a parking lot, and drove its distance in reverse about 1 residential block's length. Stopping power isnt as great as all discs, but I do feel much safer driving my XJ. Also I think the old shoes were always rubbing against the drums, because it feels more peppy off the line then ever before.

By the way, according to my FSM, the brake adjusters work by driving and stopping in both directions. Drive backwards, and brake firmly to a full stop, and repeat forward, etc. etc. Full stop every time.

ETA if your brakes seemed grabby at first, it may have been insufficient adjustment. All my XJ's have locked up when the brakes failed to stay adjusted (I've given up on self-adjusters here in the rust belt).

Police didnt go shit, and my XJ is a '88 so Im just liability which covers nothing but me which Im sure you knew. And my insurance agent took care of it, but the insurance the girl had when the cops showed up was expired, but the card wasnt so it seemed like she was insured, and the cops never forwarded the report to the courts for claims.

If its one thing i learned...

If its not now...or 5 years from now...or it could be 20 years from now...

Someday, she'll get her payback.

Thats how life works.

Braking with the parking brake, not the brake pedal, correct?

Hey,
The cylinder is cheap, Buy a new one. Gr8tires is right the spring is wrong in your first pic. it should not be on the boot. Change it to the other side.

No, with the pedal. I don't think the parking brake will work because it pulls on the bottom of the shoe instead of the top, and thus doesn't pull the adjuster cable the same.

The 95 FSM says (bolding theirs) :

a: Drive vehicle and make one forward stop followed by one reverse stop.
b: Repeat procedure 8 - 10 times to actuate self-adjuster components and equalize adjustment.
c: Bring vehicle to complete standstill at each stop. Incomplete, rolling stops will NOT activate adjuster mechanism.

Oh ok, good to know. I was misinformed!

You have a 95 FSM? :):):):):)

Yes, I have a 95 FSM and a 99 FSM (useful since I have both 95 and 99 XJ's) My son also has a 96 FSM from which I can occasionally request info by email. Please note that I tend to forget to check PM's, so if you PM me, be patient. But I can usually hunt down info when needed, if it's there.
