Fair price for a 8.25" Rear End??

Just went to the junkyard today, picked up a fairly decent headliner ($40) for my sunroof version 89' Cherokee Limited. Also a pair of aftermarket rear hatch shocks/struts that someone had just replaced before wrecking their Cherokee . . . for $25. They threw in a stock anntenae and an owner's manual for free.

Looked at the rear end in another and there is a 8.25" under a 1990 Cherokee, his price, if I pull it with my tools (and it is over 100 degrees here everyday) is $400.00, the junkyard down the street says he has one too, same price. I do not know what gears I have yet, but let's say I get lucky and one of those 2 rear ends have the same gears, is this a fair price? Or even worth it to upgrade from my Dana 30?

Thanks!

i think you meant to say dana 35 rear not dana 30

and to answer your question in my opinion i think that is too much money especially since it is from an older cherokee because it will still only be 27 spline(same as your dana 35) so it wont be much stronger

ideally what you want is a 8.25 out of a 97+ xj which will be 29 spline

or better yet a dana 44

i would not do it and keep searching

i just swapped an 8.8 under my xj and am about to put my 8.25 from my 98 on craigslist and i figure i will be lucky if i get 100 bucks for it around here

hope that helps!

400 is damn expensive for an 8.25. you should be able to get the d44 for that or less

Yes, Dana 35, lol. What a noob. Thanks for the advice, I wish I lived in your area, I would snag that rear end from you in a second. Isn't the axle tubes and housing a little stonger than the Dana 35? Whichever rear end I choose, I am going to heavily fabricate with trusses and what ever else it needs. I will also attempt to get alloy shafts in it before I bolt it up.

Also found a set of 1978 Dodge Van (1 Ton) rear leafs but he wants $100 each for those! Maybe I shouldn't have went in there with a suit and tye on . . . . . joking.

$400? Wow, I just picked up a D44 two weeks ago at the JY for $120. When I went to pay for it, the woman asked me if it was a one or two piece axle. I told her I looked like it was all one piece to me. I guess they charge more for two piece axles.

Best to go with a 29 Spline 97+ c8.25 Axle Assembly if you want a Direct Swap in.

For a XJ with an Automatic, Gears are usually 3.55
And run form about $200 here and up to $800 for a 97+ c8.25 Axle Assembly.

Prices differ for the following:

Chrysler (8-1/4), 4.10 ratio
Chrysler (8-1/4), 3.07 ratio
Chrysler (8-1/4), 3.55 ratio

Try this Site: http://www.car-part.com/index.htm IMHO

Hope this helps.

wow 120 is a steal! nice find!

If you really want a Popular Assembly Swap since you say you plan on doing some Fabrication go with a 96+ Ford Explorer V8 8.8 with 4.10 gears and Limited Slip and Disk Brakes from a Junk Yard and Run with 33" Tires with No Trouble at all. IMHO

They run $280 up.

If you are interested in doing an Axle Assembly Swap try Searching with Axle Assembly Swap or something along that Line.

Hope this helps.

X2 the 8.25 will hold up to some abuse on 33's. I run mine (27 spline)locked and have had no issues.
