OK I got a factory gas skid out of a boneyard & I think it's the wrong one. What is the difference between the pre 96 and 97 & on... I've got a 96 XJ & what appears to be a post 97 skid. Is the post 97 alittle bit narrower and a angled cut at the front pass.
corner? The one I have has no holes for the tailpipe bolts.
So much for installing the skid & hitch at the same time...
Thanks for any help....

Not sure by what you mean by an angle cut, but the 97+ skid has a curved section around the front corner on the passenger side to act as a heat shield for the plastic gas tank. It's fairly distinctive -- the 96 and older skids don't have a rounded corner shield.

96 and older skids are shaped somewhat differently than the the later model skids due to gas tank configuration and mounting. The older tanks are steel, newer ones are plastic and differ in shape.

Even in the newer skids, there's a slight variation between the '97 and later skids. Some have "fin channels" on the lower rear corners for what I assume is water drainage. The ones on the '98s and newer don't have the "fin channels", however both fin and fin-less will work on the later model XJ's.

If you were to stand in the skid while it was on the floor it would have a 45 cut off the front pass. bottom corner. It has 4 drain holes on the bottom towards the front of the skid. Part of the problem is I've never seen any XJ skid before I saw this one. It was laying on the ground behind a 1992 so I figured it was from
that vehicle. Am I right to assume that the pre 96 skid will have a cut out for the exhaust hanger?
I'll try to locate my receit & go look around some more.
Thanks for the help....

The skid I took off an '88 with factory skid package looks exactly like the one in Sequoia's link. For further clarification, the photo in the link is shot from the rear looking forward.
