Extreme 4x4 [Jeep Cherokee]

Just saw it. According to the show, all I need for "Jeep Speed" is some racing shocks. Sweet :D

You are kidding right? AZ and NM maybe but Utah is very proud of their salt.(god knows we have enough)
You have to realize that I have only been to the southern border of UT, and through Moab, so my experiences with MOMO land are limited.

It's nice to see an XJ finally getting some more air time on these sorts of shows - there hasn't been one since Stacy David bolted a Skyjacker kit onto one several years back on Trucks!

I liked the idea of the teflon coated rims (gunk doesn't stick and throw the balance off), but unless it's some really special stuff, I don't see it lasting too long in a rocky environment.

What really gets me is that they slapped 33s onto this truck and they don't seem to be considering upgrading the gears. Is this sort of information (as well as speedometer recalibration that doesn't include a PDA) so trivial as to be beneath mention? I noticed this with several Trucks! episodes as well - slap on some bigger tires, and off you go. I realize that you can't cover everything on a 30 minute show, but come on - isn't the impact of tire size on axle gearing and speedometer accuracy worthy of at least mentioning?

That aside, I intend to follow the progress of this project.

You live in Flag. Don't they use salt on the roads there? Or are they smart and just use sand?

I totally agree with you....I was waiting for them to mention gears and such, but nothing. You can put all the engine add-ons you want to to a stock 4.0L, its still gonna dog out of the gate, unless they keep it in 4low. I've had my eye on that rim for a long time and I am glad to see it on a cherokee, nice looking set-up. I think they should have done a little more research when looking for a JeepSpeed worthy suspension.....at least full-traction or something that would have gotten them a multi-linked up front, their castor is gonna change like a mofo. And 7*degrees postive castor up front with a 6.5", I wonder what their front driveshaft pinion angle looks like. Gonna vibe like crazy at speed. The are gonna at least need 4.10's to even begin to hope to run in 4high or 4 Full-time.......Plus what about a SYE for the back........I think they need to do a little more research.

You nailed it and that's why they should have hired me for that job instead of that hoser.
Fawk, can you imagine the influx of NOOBS we're gonna get because of that epileptisode?

Is that even a JeepSpeed-legal kit?
yes it is legal, I would not run radius arms in that environment, our rig is full traction, cage tied to all suspension, eveything reinforced, every seam on the unibody grinded and welded, trussed spooled 35-spline 9", hydro bumps on all four corners, they failed to address the shockmounts, got a pre-bent cage that ties only to the floor, etc etc. I was extremely disapointed in that show. That thing will not only be undergeared but will crack in half, soon if they try to race it. Ours has taken over 12-months to build and it is another few months until TESTING, much more to building a capable desert racer than what they covered, hopefully it will do better than the Ranger they built, but doubtfull. Anyways good to see coverage.... at least.

they make it seem so easy.

that xj they had had no rust. they were just unscrewing bolts and replacing all the stuff. no need for pb blaster, no problems.

wish everything went that good.

Of course! They always make it look easy on TV :)

My 90 XJ came apart smooth with little rust, and it's been in VA all its life, I was quite suprised!

EDIT: They are probably using Rustys because they are adveritsed on "power block" all the time. I doubt they got to choose.

I fail to see the relevance of the supplied link.

It will probably become clearer as this thread expands.

Substitute "Cherokee on Xtreme 4x4" for lightbulb in the thread.

i wish i could have installed my kit in half an hour, and take time for comercial brakes.

as for the pre bent cage. came from a local shop, EOR. they suck. my friend had a 8.8 swap done there on his YJ. the didnt set the pinion angle right so they used shims. and they only tac welded the shock mounts on. they put a custom exhaust on it but it rubbed on the rear drive shaft.

nother buddy had a custom bumper built there for his ZJ. it was basicly the same design as the JCR offroad REAR bumper for ZJ's but it was put on the front. and to mount it they drilled and used self tapping bolts into the front 'cross member'. looked pretty funney acually.

nother guy at my school with a XJ had a lift put on there. RE 3.5". they didnt give him his RE LCA's or extended front brake lines. also didnt take the studs out for the t-case drop. instid they cut them off and tac welded the 1" drop on.

i hope a newb dosent see that show and get a XJ and throw a 6" lift on there and not do any thing about rear drive shaft.

Why not?
I ran a 6" lift for a year with the stock drivetrain and only replaced it with a two piece when I cratered my TC.
Most pre-'97 XJs don't have vibe isses at that height.
If they'd had a '97+, then yes, I'd have to agree with you, even if they only put on a 3" lift.

Oh, and that place sounds like it's run by a clusterfu*k of delinquents.
I'd love for some scoundrel to try and cheat me with some sub-standard work or theft of my parts.:twak:

X2....Except the "cratering" part.
