Ok. Im designing an exocage. i dont really want to cut up the interior and want to protect the pillers. Anyways, i want to tie it into the roof by bolting it to where the roof rack bolts on. I know there was a thread on safari rakcs that had a few pics of those that bolted to the roof that way. This is how i want to tie it in. I also would just like some more/better pics of some exo's. If anyone has pics of tying it in this way or mounting it this way that would be great!!

Thanks

Just FYI.

An exo without an inner cage is not really a good idea.

What? Lots of people have made solid exo-only cages. They might not be as strong as and exo-internal combo, and they might take more tube, but it's not a bad idea. A bad idea would be running no cage at all when he knows he needs one, right?

As far as pics go, check out xjdb.com Are you talking about tying into the gutter mounts? or to the factory rack location? I know there are several threads discussing tying to the gutter mounts, try another search with "gutter mounts" in it and you should have more luck.

The rack mounts have no significant structure. If you want to tie an exo-only cage to the body, do it at the gutter. This area is significantly stronger and will provide a much better area to tie in at.

im talking rack mounts. i have found a few exo's that use gutters but i feel the rack mounts are more stable and durable

Why do you feel that way?

There is considerably more structure, and strength, along the pinch seam at the gutter rail than there is in the unsupported sheetmetal along the roof where the roof rack bolts go through.

Look up FarmerMatts roof rack for some ideas on tying into the rack bolts........though he did this for his very stout roof rack and not his cage. He bent a length of square tube to conform to the slight curve of the roof and bolted it through the roof rack bolts.

I can see if you don't want to weld to the body/paint that it is attractive to tie into the roof rack bolts, but it would be stronger to use the gutters.

I know I need a cage...

I dont run one...

I would never run an exterior cage...

i didnt realize the gutters were stronger. I just thought they would bend easily. I will just do both since im making it all my self. I lust like the idea of using the holes since my rack will be gone and they are ugly.... but than again, an exo isnt exactly the prettiest thing in the world...

Way to add good content to the thread:banghead:

I hear so many people talking about how ulgy an Exo is. Like the Xj was preaty to start with. A big square brick on wheels. Still looks better then any Hummer I have ever seen.

I like the way an Exo looks. I guess it's becouse I eat alot of shell fish:laugh:

I fully agree with using both. If your removing the factory rack, I would also, why not use both.
When I go to cage my junk It will have to be an Exo. I am a big man and just flat do not have room for the inter cage. I have seen plenty of rigs with just a exo that have held up to many a roll. If i was flying down trails doing Jeep Speed style it would be a different story though.

I agree with you, i like the look of exo's just most people dont. but i dont give a rats about them. now i just need help coming up with the design and how to intergrate a winch plate to a pre-runner style bumper like the four real steel ones. thats the look im going for on the front of the exo.

also what is the best size tube/pipe for this. (lets not start another tube vs. pipe arguement guys, we have enough) tube is stronger, but pipe holds up well when designed properly.

I know guys that run 35's on D35's and have not broken them.....but that does not mean it is right.

Not saying it won't provide some protection....but just like an internal cage you need trianglation, in an exo that means at least a partial internal cage.

But hey....what do I know?

here are some roof racks that are designed the way i want to intergrate them into my exo, mounting wise. Floor wise maybe something more triangular for strength of the exo

how come you cant run an exo halo, maybe exo a-pilar protection, but an internal diagonal, and internal b-pillars... I helped put together a cage for a friend this way... all the strength of an internal, all the space of an external...

im 6'-4" and I was more than comfortable in the front seats of the finished caged XJ...

Personally - B-pillars that attach to a 1' cantalevered arm at the bottom of rockers are not what im intersted in... B-pillars, C-pillars - all should attach to a nicely re-enforced set of uni-body rails... at the rails...

A halo above the roof to keep head-room, and a internal bracing is the best way to go...

I dont run a cage yet 'cuse i dont have the time to make one right... and will drive like I dont have a cage untill I can afford the time to make one right...

Hmmmm.....Is this possible? I supose so but.....it would include not trying to keep up with Taylor or Goat or Ron or Fish boy or.....you see what I am saying?
I am not caged, I don't think I drive any different than I will when I am caged. There are the many who have suggested I belong in a cage....but....

Taylor is the only one I know of that I would call fast....and that is not to say that the otheres are slow...

BTW What was this thread about anyway? :dunno:

:D

yes I do... but there are lines that I will not take right now, and I will back down right now from 'tippy' stiuations that later I might try just a little more, or 'just go and see' a little higher...

And ill try and keep up with anyone who is willing to lend me a strap when I need it... :D

i think an exo cage is better than the one that goes inside..when i was in venezuela i had one in my toyota because it just protects the car and me more than the inside one...and if you dont wheel with a helmet then the interior cage its equal to nothing..
