Ok, So it's been a while since I've been around, mainly because the new engine has been running like crap. I'm about to disassemble and recheck everything myself now that i have a garage to work in, but in the process, I'm going to pull the A/C system out. It's noisy (bad bearings), doesn't work, and the crap is always in the way. My intention is to pull the doors eventually, so A/C is essentially worthless anyway. Plus, the extra airflow in the engine compartment with the increased airflow through the radiator with the removal of the A/C radiator thingy should help with idle temps down too.
So with that said, I keep reading that in order to legally evacuate the stuff, I have to take it to a shop that will do it with an EPA approved reclaiming machine. I've called three shops in my area so far, and not a one has the ability to reclaim R12, they all say they can only do 134A...One guy even told me that if he was in my position, he'd just vent it when nobody was looking. Consequently, I'm guessing they're either different machines for evacuating the two substances, or they just don't want to contaminate the 134A machine with the R12.
Anywho, now I find myself between a rock and a hard spot. Anyone got any ideas? Anyone know of a mechanic in the SD area that can recycle R12? Anyone got an R12 reclaiming machine? Open to options, but I'm not hot at all on venting into the atmosphere after I read R12 can turn into Phosgene gas....not looking to turn my garage into a concentration camp gas chamber in the slightest!
