Anyone here been over there? Mainly central london. After some delays ive commited to this trip and hopefully with the invite for a job if I get lucky, I just dont know what to expect!

Expect bland tasteless food :laugh3:

England is probably the closest thing you will come to America. Well, maybe Canada, but they dont count. Only spent a week there, but it wasnt too bad. If you like seafood there are a couple really nice places that just opened up (travel channel). Also, hit the outskirts, outlaying towns. Food is fresh (farm animals) and shouldnt cost that much.

The people are just like anyplace else. good and bad. the beer though, someplaces serve it at room temp (normal) but then again, that was 15 years ago, things may have changed.

Room temperature is SOP in Europe. That took some getting used to, they don't do ice. Always ask for bottled water. Most places will give you the option when you order it.

You can take the Underground pretty much everywhere. I think we took a taxi maybe once the entire time we were there. I would highly recommend picking up an Oyster Card for the underground for the duration of your trip. The Travel Card is only good for 1-3 days. Get an Oyster Card for zones 1-6. Almost everything you will do will fall in Zones 1-3. I would pick up the £50 card, that is good for about 22 fares. If you tap that out you can always recharge the card at a station. You just swipe and go, beats the hell out of waiting to buy a ticket every time you get on the train. You can also order it beforehand and have it shipped to your house here before you even leave for your trip.

My favorite area in London was the Green Park stop. The Hard Rock Cafe is right here, which I am a big fan of. You can stroll right over to Buckingham Palace from here as well. If I were to go back I would most likely stay at The Park Lane Hotel - London (Sheraton Park Lane). There are also some good pubs to wander into off of Piccadilly Circus.

See as much as you can and take a lot of pictures. There were plenty of things that we never got around to in the week we were there.

no airconditioning. its expensive. the us dollar is worthless. beer is good. on't insult soccer. dont buy mexican food. be wary of the girl's teeth. dont let them know you are scottish and irish and catholic, they don't like that. one of the best places to ever go.

...its expensive.

I am English and that is the biggest understatement ever! It is a very expensive place to live, shop, eat out, buy and support a car etc. If you are looking to stay for a while and work there, make sure you do enough research around the area you want to live in terms of cost of living so your English salary would at cover it. The national health care system is extremely poor (or it is if you are used to good health insurance in this country). Most of the working population (or it was 10 years ago when I still lived there) have very little disposable income for toys, vacations etc. Just something to consider.

The weather is also very much like Seattle with very gray, cloudy and rainy days. It is a big change if used to the number of blue sky days in Colorado.

get on board with the humor?,its dry but very funny, very monty python
Its crazy kinda like The Train leaves at 6 you either get on board or you play catch up all day, LOVE that one

Just remember. A saloon is a 4dr sedan, and estate is a 4dr station wagon, and a hatch is a 2dr hatchback. A hi-lux is a toyota tacoma, diesel cars are supreme, and dont drive through downtown london.

Don't drink and drive.

From what I've been told, the po-po walk up to your car with breathalyzer in hand. Everything else comes second.

I actually work in the UK for Halliburton as a field engineer. Luckily I live in a company house and my food is paid for because everything is very, very expensive.

Everybody is crazy drivers so watch out when you are walking and driving around.

I really have not ran into anyone who didnt like americans. But Scots, Irish, Welch, and English dont seem to get along to well. Well at least in the pubs anyway.

Dont even think of drinking anything and driving. One pint is the limit.

And be ready for bland food, and cloudy wet weather.
