Emission Maintenance Timer

Hi there Jeep-friends!
I guess it's not an everyday happening having a Norwegian in this forum. Well it's a reason for that, over here there ain't as many Cherokee owners with knowledge about my question. The Emission Maintanence Light has turned on and the time has come to change the oxygen sensor. The sensor has a timer device that can be disconnected or replaced, but how do you disconnect it, and how do you find the bastard? I do have the Hayne's manual and in that book there is a couple of lines about the procedure, but no illustrations that describe where to find it. Is there anyone who know how to do this? Is there any web-site who describes how to do this? The price of having this done at a workshop here is crazy, it would probably cost 550$..My car is a 1988 Cherokee XJ 4.0, AW4, 242 and Dana 44 front and rear.
Thanks!

A new Oxygen sensor should be no more than like $60 or so i believe, thats what i paid for mine anyway. On an '88 i believe the sensor is right on the exhaust manifold a few inches before the collector.

Is the steering wheel on your XJ on the opposite side than the U.S. version?
On my '88, the emission timer was located right behind the cruise control module - which is a yellow plastic box. They are under the dash right beside the steering column. You have to move the cruise control module out of the way to see the emission's timer. The timer on my XJ was about 3inches, by 2inches. However, it was clearly labeled as the maintenance timer. You could see clock gears in it.

Thanks!
The timer (bastard) is now located and will be removed tomorrow! The oxygen sensor cost me 125$, but if the boys at the workshop should have changed it for me it would have cost an additional 400$.... The sensor has been changed, but the whereabouts of the timer was the big problem.

$400 to change an oxygen sensor? Yikes!!! I thought American mechanics were thieves, but that's the worst thing I have ever heard. It must be about a 5-minute job -- okay, in a shop make it 15 minutes to allow for paperwork and requisitioning the part from the stock room. That still translates to a rate of $1600 per hour!

By the way, Arnt, welcome to NAXJA. Now that you found us, I hope we'll see you on the forums regularly. I believe you are the first visitor from Norway, but we have had a few visitors from Sweden and one from Iceland.

Hi Eagle!
Yup, the prices over here are CRAZY as hell, the workshop I talked to is authorized by Jeep, but.... I figured out it's best changing this little thing myself, and it took me about 10 calories and a bottle of coce to do, and I'm one experience richer. The timer was the hardest thing to find, and the Haynes manual didn't say where to find it... The sensor itself was easy to locate and replace, but then the light was still on, and the timer had to be dealt with. Now it's running great again and use less gas, so everybody is happy.

Do you think the workshop rates are crazy, then listen to this! We pay about 5 bucks pr. US gallon of gas!! This is the worst thing about owning a Jeep 4.0L in Norway!

Thanks mates!
