Elbe work party

Elbe: There is a work party coming up August 19th and 20th. We need 20 people each day to build a new bridge. If the bridge doesn't get done, trail is closed until it is - Can't use it with the a missing bridge. Contact Dale at [email protected] so that I can get a head count. We can't start the project if we can't finish.
The TimberTamers are considering adopting the Sunshine trail and the Faithwheelers will discuss the Gotcha trail. We're looking for other clubs to adopt a trail. This will give that club the responsibilty for trail maintenance on that trail. Contact me for details.
The new reservation procedure for the campground is working well. Dale will contact Tripower to make sure that this information is included in upcoming issues.

I really want to be apart of more "formal" trail clean ups (I normally do trail clean ups while I am on the trail picking up others trash), I know many of us do attend trail clean ups like this that are organized by other larger groups. However, I will not be in town on those days to help with this effort.

However, this brings up a very good point. This is probably something we should have a conversation about as a group, maybe at NWFest. Do we want to look at adopting a trail? Do we want to get more involved in clean up's put on by other larger groups? How do we want to do our part to protect our sport?

I think this is a conversation we need to have, and it is something that EVERYONE in the group needs to really consider before making any formal decisions.

This actually came up last year, I believe... Where the 'problem' lies with the actual trail adoption is that all the trails are 'taken', so to speak. Now, that doesn't mean that we can't get something going with another group to help out...

The other MAJOR issue we've had in the past is commitment. It seems up here (more than other places) that people come and go, dropping off without a trace. I can't tell you how many times I've had things set up with people, only to have them drop off the face of the planet. They never post to the email group or the message board again. Ever. However, I've noticed that we've got a stronger core group in the last year, so IMHO we can 'baby step' into a cleanup effort. Consensus the last time we brought this up is that we wouldn't 'commit' a certain number of folks to a cleanup, but instead send whomever can make it.

I certainly feel this is worth discussing at NWF.

I totally agree with you on the other points, though Michael. It's too bad that a group as large as ours seems reletively quiet on trail "issues." Good call about bringing it up at NW Fest.

Not so much that, I think, as it is most likely the education process. There's only so much one or two of us can do as leaders. If people want to get others involved they're certainly welcome to step up and make things happen. Let us know how we can help and we'll do what we can. I think it's absolutely wonderful that folks post clean-ups on this forum as a way to bring attention to the practice.

Read what I wrote and look at it from that perspective. We've figured out that certain things come in time, as our group isn't largely composed of deeply experienced folks. As I said...all in good time.

And Phil, this should NOT be on your shoulders (you have plenty to do, we need to get deeper support from others in the group). We have grown alot in the last year or two and what I think is important is to bring up the discussion again. In fact: "I will commit to bring this up at NW Fest".

Personally I think we need to get 1 or 2 people to put together a couple of groups to provide some assistance to other clean ups that are available (just like the one that sparked this conversation) and see how successful we are at putting some people together to do this. We do need to take baby steps, we just need to start the baby steps!!

Quite often when I head up to Evan's there's clean ups on the whole park by jeep clubs. They often have a sign-in sheet where they request everyone who enters the park to sign in; then assist on the litter patrol and shrubbery trimming and the like. I think this could be a good practice as it doesn't require a few folks to do all the work, but a lot of random wheelers that aren't affiliated with a particular club to participate. Also, it would spread the word that even exists. I would suggest getting together with a more experienced club and get some ideas. Unless you gentlemen know more than I. I won't be there for NWFest, but I think that'd be something to mention.

On the the bridge building I'm not able to make it on that weekend, but the following weekend there's a group of 5-8 of us heading up there for some camping/wheeling. I'm sure at least a few of us would be more than glad to help out on that weekend. Anyways I have to get my POS Cherokee mobile first. Good luck either way. Also, where abouts on the trail is the bridge required? Is it one that already exists and is broken or a place that needs one. There's so many bridges up there, I'm having trouble picturing where one's needed.

The benefit of adopting a trail at a sanctioned ORV area (Walker Valley, Tahuya, Evans, Elbe, etc...) is the DNR PAYS FOR IT, you just provide the manpower, they even tell you what they need done, you can tailor the trail to your own liking, they will give you rules that you need to follow.

Just a Reminder if any of you Guys and Gals have the time.

We could REALLY use your help this weekend at Elbe. If you want to come, we could do the work during the day, and then tackle the Busywild on a night run. That is what we did last time and it was lots of fun.

A hardcore trail at night... But it shouldn't be that hard this time around, it will still be a challenge though.
