Dumb question ??? about welding

Hopefully this isn't too dumb of a question . I have never welded anything "on" the xj , all the welding so far has been done on the side and then bolted up . My question is ...... is there any precautions I need to take before welding ? Can I just ground to the frame and get after it ? Do I have to worry about gas in the tank when I am welding on the frame or body ? Can I weld next to the tank ? I see threads with welding all over but it never tells of anything like that . just want to be safe .... besides I am allergic to getting blown up !

Disconnect the battery and use common sense when welding around or near the tank (i.e. don't go welding 3" from the vent tube) and you'll be fine.

Yup. Should be good to go with that.

Cool , I was pretty concerned ..... you always hear horror stories ! The closest I need to get to the tank is at the rear frame in and around the rear leaf hangers . I should be good then . Thanks for the info guys !

watch where the rear axle vents into the frame too. the frame-rail may have gear oil in it

Grind off the zinc and burn it in. I never disconnect my battery and I've done "a little" welding on my Jeep.
just looking for the right way ...... really dont want mishaps . hard enough to slide the budget for the xj by the wife ........ hurt the breadwinner and see how she does !!!!!!! Why not disconnect the battery ? Seems like common sense with the polarity and all ? Not sure ...... I'm the one askin questions

if your welding near the tank, use a "fire watch" if that makes you feel more comfortable.

Yeah everybody says to disconnect the battery. I did the first several times I welded on mine, then one day I forgot. Everything was fine, now I havent disconnected since. If you really want to lose your radio presets every time you can, but not me :D
