How big of a difference is there between DOM and regular round steel tubing? I know that it is stronger, but is it nessesary?

It stands for drawn over mandrel. It means it has no seam, not welded together.

it is welded together, and you can often still see where the seam is, but it is then drawn over a mandrel, so that it is smooth inside. the other thing this accomplishes is making sure the thickness is very consistent.

oh, guess I didn't really answer the original question, yes DOM is stronger than HREW tube which is stronger than pipe. Chromoly is even stronger than DOM as well. these are all assuming same diameter and wall thicknesses. it all depends on what you're using it for, I wouldn't hesitate in using pipe for rockers or bumpers, but you should use DOM or HREW for a cage. what are you building?
Well technically there is a seam, but the tubing is then drawn over a mandrel whereby the seam is machined/compressed making for a denser and a more uniform tube. The results are that you cannot tell where there ever was a seam. DOM is stronger. Necessary, well thats upto the rules in the sanctioning race body you are competing in, or your wallet, or your peace of mind.
BTW, chromoly tubing is also Drawn Over Mandrel (seamless), its the only way its sold, but the main thing in that kind of tubing is that its made with 4130 steel, high alloy, and very hard, about 40% stronger than mild steel.
