Does this tick you off ?

Am I the only one whos patient with the parts people?

I have no idea how many kinds of cars out there, and I dont expect anyone to know if the ZJ didnt start until 93, or a XJ ended in 01. How many of you who are bitching know the minute details about the imports?

Like most everyone else, my Jeep is a compilation of a bunch of different cars and trucks. While building my front 44, when they asked what car I had, I didnt say 89 Jeep Cherokee. I said 1977 Ford F150 with the 5.8L.

Ive gone to pretty much every auto parts store, and always had pretty good luck. Just do your homework online if you are doing something custom, and find a part number, or specific years and models.

If you don't even know what model your vehicle is, IMO, you shouldn't be going to pick up parts for it....hell, I'm not even sure you should be allowed to fuel it up on your own....

:D

thats why i live in Oregon, they fuel up for me....

I try to be nice to anyone in retail until they show an attitude, if they are just asking questions even if repeatedly its not a big deal if theres no attitude. Like said here, theres too many cars to expect someone to know a lot about them all and work at those places for that pay.

I used to over night stock at walmart and the people would expect use to know every detail about every product in the store. When you didnt then you must be an idiot and they like to tell you about it.

I have one hell of a temper but I can promise you I'm not going to put my annual salary at risk just for the satisfaction of bitch slapping your silly a$$. :loveu:

But i'm sure anybody on here who works or has worked customer service at a point in their life has certainly had the thought cross their mind of just taking the idiot's head right off.....I know I did a lot :D

sigh.... just because everyone here seems to think they are the masters of automotive knowledge just because they know alot about XJs and jeeps in general, and parts swaps from other vehicles, doesnt make you any better than the guy on the other side of the counter. you have to know alot about ONE vehicle. we have to know alot about EVERY vehicle, because 80% of the people that come in are self riteous pricks who think they know everything about everything.

give your parts guy a break, he is just trying to get you the right crap for christs sake. if you are so good at looking up parts WTF are you doing asking for US to look it up? get your ass on the internet and come in and tell me what you need, do the work yourself if you dont think we are up to your standards. i am VERY good at my job, and i get a-holes coming in all day assuming i dont know WTF i'm talking about, when half the time i ask them specific questions that they dont have the answer for.

be aware, the guy behind the counter thinks you are 10x the idiot you think he is. getting treated like crap for trying to help smartasses all day will make you think that way.

just some insight from the other side of the counter... rant over. :confused1

I like napa, I can go online and add all the parts to my cart then print it and take it to the store. I get funny looks from the counter guys when I come in with an exact list with part numbers. A couple times they asked how I got a list like that, seems alot of the employees dont know about their own website...

The local Autozoo crew has learned several things when dealing with my vehicles:
1) Don't ask me what it is FOR, ask what it came off of.
2) Do not argue with me, I know what kind of Jeep it is.
3) If you can, let me use the comp, and I will be more than happy to go my parts, so that you don't have to stop you discussion with your buddies.
The last one seems to be a real favorite for everyone.

I always just tell the parts people that I need parts for a "small, square bodied Cherokee", most of even the biggest idiots understand that!

So here's what happened yesterday. A woman call's to see if she can get an oil change. Now, I don't normally answer the phone but everyone else was busy. I ask & she say's "It's a Jeep". I ask what model & she say's.

Get this.

"I don't know,It's a white one"

I've said it before, I'll say it now, and I'll probably say it again sometime next week -

"Find a counterman you can trust, someone who knows his shite, and stick with him!" (I use "him" in the general sense, since that's what I was taught. Besides, "him/her/it/them" or "his/hers/its/their" is just too damned cumbersome and too damned stupid to deal with.)

If they catch the little curve balls, they'll probably catch the wild ones as well. If you can find one counterman you can trust, find out what the regular parts of his schedule are. If you can find a half-storeful, it's even odds that one of them will be there when you walk in. This is coming from a guy who works on pretty much everything these days, and I get handed off to the new guy at my local to "break him in."

Sending someone else for parts? My wife will go. I write her a note with exactly what I'm working on and exactly what I want - simplifies things. I tell her who to go talk to (the guys down at the local all recognise her anyhow,) and if she comes back with something wrong, it's my fault. Easy.

I've been on the other side of the counter as well. Gawd. Frankly, there are people I've run across who simply should not own a motor vehicle - I wouldn't trust them to know where to find the spark plug on a two-horse Briggs. They're that fscking stupid.

"I need a fan belt for my car."
"OK. What kind of car do you have?"
"Blue." Then he stood there and stared at me. (Guys, I shit you not!)

I couldn't get any more information out of him, so I went back and got the biggest G-D serpentine belt we had - thing ran about $70. When he came back in a half-hour complaining that it didn't fit (y'think? It was probably longer than his car...) he actually had the information I needed. But, he'd managed to get the new belt he'd just bought all nasty, and I couldn't put it back on the shelf.

Fortunately, my manager backed me up when I told him we couldn't take it back. Idiot boy decided he wanted to come across the counter at me/us (I wasn't sure which - but I had the longer reach and could react more quickly.) I grabbed him by the collar and stuffed him in the core bin under the counter. (NB: Don't try this at home, kids. My manager at that store would back me up on pretty much anything, and there was also an off-duty cop I recognised in line. So, I had plenty of witnesses, and didn't have to worry about handling things.)

Some people are just too damned stupid to be allowed in public without a safety escort. Making assault illegal as a blanket policy is doing society a grave disservice - stupidity should be painful - figuratively and literally...

"ohhhhh the White one, Ok.... Wait you said White correct, not chartreuse? Your sure its white, can you look out and check now to be sure its not chartreuse? They use different oil and we want to do whats best for you and your vehicle."

HEY... aren't you that guy from that O'Reilly's I went to!?!?

Hahahaha just messin with ya man. I understand what you're sayin and I'm sure there's an equal amount of dickheads on both sides of the counter.

Why don't we all just not be dickheads? :dunno:

"I don't know,It's a white one"
i like the blank stare i get when looking up brake pads and i ask if its a 2door or 4door. all kidding aside, at LEAST 70% of the time, they have to go look.

how can you not know how many doors your car has!!?!? or what year it is??! i scares me to death knowing people that are this mentally inept are servicing thier own vehicles, and driving on the same roads as me.

Actually since she said it was a 2006 or 2007, I wanted to make sure we had a filter on-hand, and if not, get one e-ordered.

I'm tired of searching classifieds on the tnet for a new xj and entering "Jeep Cherokee" and having 300 jeeps come up and 26 be xj's and the rest being grands.

PROTIP:> add -grand to your search string. like "cherokee -grand" it will exclude the word grand from your search.
