This is in my sisters 87 xj. We were wondering why it wasn't getting hot fast or wouldn't blow hot heat. Just got some time to bust it open to find this.
Does this count as a stuck open thermostat?

Not only that but whom ever put the old one in caked it with silicone sealant I just spent 30 minutes scraping it off.

Mike the answer to that is both. I got it to run a little warmer at 160 now but it needs more. I'm almost wondering if this new thermostat is already stuck open?

I had a problem recently and ended up fixing it by replacing the thermostat. If your heater is hot enough, I would check out having an air bubble or defective temp sender.

I fixed mine so good last night that on my way to metberry that I think I burnt stuff stitting in the defrost cause it started smoking and now smells funny.

Mine ran fine(I thought) until I put in a new upper hose, t-stat, and radiator and did a full flush on the system... Now it runs in that 160-175 range. I think its the cooling system doing its job for once combined with the colder weather. Im curious to see how it is in the summer time... BTW, my heater runs nice and hot. If it is anything its probably a bad sensor...

I thought I had a RENIX system topped up, turns out there was something blocking the bypass hose. When it overheated, I had to take it apart to find the problem. That was quite a bit more than an air bubble.
Take it for a drive Keifer, uphill and down. Make sure the coolant is topped up. Turn the heater on high and touch both heater hoses. One should be hot, the other should be pretty warm. If the bottom hose is cold, the heater core might well be plugged.
