Difference between 242 and 249

I am helping a kid with a Grand Cherokee he got. It has a 249 with a bad viscous coupler. We scored a deal on a 242 and a 249 as a package deal. I am looking at helping do a swap this Saturday. He wants the 242 instead of the 249. Are the driveshaft lengths going to be the same? Any other swap issues?

Re: Differences between 242 and 249

Tom, I just did a 231 swap into my Grand cherokee, due to the Viscous coupler problem with the Factory 249.

Both Driveshafts should swap in Without a problem, Now where you MIGHT have a problem is the input shaft length on the 242 possibly being different in length then the 249.

There is alot of info on Google for a quick "Input shaft gear swap" I, on the other hand didn't have the issue so that is about as far as i can go with that.

A Tip would be, At the same time you swap the 242, Upgrade the front Driveshaft and Pinion Yoke to XJ equipment. Do away with the CV Driveshaft.

Thanks for the link. I'm hoping I don't have to crack the cases and swap the planetaries, but if I do, its not that big a deal.
