omg... i didnt know they made higher than a Dana 60, this maybe a major noob question, but what is the difference between the dana 35-40-60 and 80? i assume they get progressivly stronger but thats about as far as this shade tree mechanics knowledge goes...

where did u see this dana 80, the largest i heard of was a 70 and its a little stronger than the 60 because of a larger ring gear, however because of the larger ring gear the case was bigger which gave up ground clearance, thats why ppl run 60's, cause the strength isnt worth giving up the clearence.

The Dana 80 is in some 1-ton and up pickup trucks - but it's HUGE.

I'm trying to open a line of communication with someone at Dana to get all this sort of thing sorted once and for all, but it's taking time. Dana filed Chapter 13 reorganisation, and they're still reorganising...

found one for 200$ =P it on the phx craigslist

A guy could get them in a 2500 dodge with the CTD and a manual tranny. or in the 3500.

They have 1.5" 35 spline axle shafts, the same as most D70s, and some D60s (most guys swap the 1.5" shafts into their 30 spline D60s).

The ring gear is somewhere around 11". Huge.

A guy is better off with a 35 spline/1.5" D60, IMHO. Better yet, a chevy 14B.

Aren;t 60 and above full floaters as well??

Yes. Ford did use some semi-float 60's for van usage but 90% of OEM 60's are full floaters.

The Dana 80 also takes 5 quarts of gear oil.

Hm......Civic's use 4 quarts in the motor, don't they?

Civics use gear oil in the motor!? :laugh3:

the loss in ground clearance between a 70 and 60 is a whopping 5/8", its the GM 14bolt that has horrible ground clearance

not if you shave it some...my 14b has 1/4" MORE clearance than a d60 now, and I didn't shave the gear any.

BTW, they also make dana 70's, dana 135's, and I'm sure there are more that are bigger.

A D80 is also found in many trucks in the 1.5-5 ton range. The shape is basically the same as the D60 but much taller. It looks kind of like an out of shape D60. They are proportionately stronger but you really cannot use one without 49" tires. the D70 uses the same cover as the D60 and is only ~5/8" closer to the ground, get the Ford D70 if you want one, they have a smooth bottom, the Chevy and Dodge have a huge lip on the bottom that will take days to grind off.....
